As a professional with over 18 years in casino business I may say just one thing - bravo! This will improve your offer for foreign visitors for sure! Plus good chance to make it good choice for entertaintment of locals. I'm sorry I can't expect to be invited for the opening ceremony in Hotel Jugoslavija. The gap between Croatia and Serbia is still too lagre (the recent war!) but I'll come to see it once in the near future, I hope...

Smart move for Belgrade in developing their tourist economy, fits right in with the general party and nightclub spirit of the city.

Plenty of small time sports gambling clubs exist all over the city to take advantage of the lower class already, this will not effect their lives in the least.

Vicotr,

For once I find that I am in complete agreement with you. Casino's are essentially another tax on the poor. And in Serbia, ravaged by wars and economic isolation, it's the last thing that country needs.

Yes some tourists may cross the Danube to spend a weekend gambling, but by far the main patron will be a Serb and most likely a poor one whom can ill afford to lose what little money he or she has.

There must be better economic initiatives which can be explored and which would be more attractive than casinos.

Comment for Victor,

I am sorry i do not know your ethnicity but your Serb complex is frankly amazing! People starving in Serbia, your right in Kosovo Serbs are starving, in Belgrade? I dont think so Salaries are due to go up by 13% and with the low living costs there plenty of people will be able to go to the Casino.
Serbia isnt the poor poverty stricken place of the mid-90s it is on the up and if you dont believe me i suggest you read the economics pages, along with a look at the building boom currently taking place not to mention EU membership round the corner.

Victor, its not your place to make comments about Serbia since you have a poor understanding and have nothing better to do then try and spread your hate and anguish for a proud nation.

There is a lots of people in Serbia with a lots of money. Some of them make it legaly some not. As 4 casino in Hotel Jugoslavija it was there before ,owned by Arkan but in 1999 USA bomb that building and there goes casino. Also Hotel Jugoslavija is not the only one, there is a few more but this one as b92 reported will be luxury casino. I dont mind gambling as long it is not state money. Freedom of choice if it is yours , you have right to waste it(money). Consider that Belgrade becoming tourist place again and by FT report last year financial capital of SE Europe, so all this fat EU businessman and various EU ,UN staff need place to chill out. I am sure that ordinary Serbs will not be allowed near casino apart
ones who will work as stuff 4 small sallary. Money talks people, capitalism and democracy on the road in Serbia. welcome

This is sad. In a country who has ravaged by the wars, there is better thing to do. There are so many living under the level of poverty in Serbia, who receive so little money, especially the elderly people and the poor, who lack the essential, that a casino is not the answer to their misery. Furthermore, the poor, attracted by money easily win, will spend the few dollars they have to get rich. This is a poor initiative and a very dangerous societal choice.
