Fantastic post Walter. Amazing how bloggers here are so much more in-tune to what is happening in the Balkans than these "so called" world leaders.

I am tired of these Western oligarchs patting themselves on the back when all they have done is create chaos. These criminals broke up Yugoslavia for their own perceived benefit, and now you want some kind of credit. PLEASE!

The Serbian Radical Party is always there for the Serbian people and we will not hesitate to turn to a progressive, ambitious party with an alternative and independent vision and leaders with strong independent visions.

Words like 'extreme nationalism' is ridiculous enough considering many Serbs I know who support the party and movement are law-abiding, God-fearing, logically thinking people who do not stand for injustice against our people and state.

I think its the EU that needs serious help if some countries want to break international law and other strong and independent countries dont.

Bravo Walter!

And i urge somebody to send that croatian article to the Jerusalem post, infact i will! Funny since it was only a month or two ago Mesic was in Tel aviv apologising.

Back to Kosovo, i think independance will happen frankly but it will benifit nobody, with a Russian veto Kosovo will have no UN seat or World bank seat so will only have the US to aquire funds, which is will have to share with Albania since neither of them will be entering the EU anytime soon. Apart from the uproar from Russia and other countries such as Indonsesia (largest Muslim population on Earth incidently) and China there will be uproar much closer to home for the Albanians, the Bulgars, Greeks and Montengrins whose church was also founded in Kosovo will have nothing to do with the defacing of their ally Serbia or the Albanians first attempt at creating a second state.

Any Albanians who think Kosovo will be at peace after independance and suddenly become a prosperous young state such as Croatia, forget it frankly, Creating a country based on demographics and booting out all of the other people is doomed to fail. NATO may try to stabalise the area, but lets face it they are not too good at that take a look at Afganistan.

Since when did "nationalism" become a bad word or thing? Should Serbs or anyone else become like Americans or the British who only care about money? Americans don't even have a clue as to who they are (national heritage/history) and they don't much give a damn. We are so divided and so mixed (Race, religion, ethnic groups, culture) that I don't think anyone hear even knows what being an "American" means. The only thing Americans have in common with one another is our love of gain & unrestrained consumption. Is this the example that the rest of the world should follow? Is it a good idea for Serbs to abandon everything that makes them Serbian and become part of a EU FEDERAL SUPERSTATE? I don't believe so, the nation state is the best system humanity has devised and nationalism is at the core of this system.

What debate is this man talking about? How can “debates in the Security Council” take place when the end result is not debatable? He invites Serbia into EU partnership and yet states “EU could assume the chief role” in Kosovo and I assume Serbia. To Rehn this partnership means Serbia is silent and compliant and gives up the cradle of its culture to internationally sponsored violence that has killed 2000 persons and displaced another 200, 000.

Rehn wants Serbia and Kosovo to be independent like Iraq and Afghanistan. Why is Rehn not championing the breakaway Georgian and Moldavian regions so that they can join Russia? Rehn’s position and NATO’s position from the outset was to destroy a strong Yugoslavia that he was not able to push around and replace it with client states with their hand out begging for scraps from EU and their agencies instrumental in destabilization of Yugoslavia the IMF and the World Bank.
.
If Kosovo becomes independent Balkan stability will end with that independence. He knows and I know the front line states with Albania will be destabilized as will many other parts of the world and before long we will have the recreation of the Balkan Alliance (Serbia, Greece Bulgaria and Montenegro) and this time it will remain united against the reincarnation of the Young Turks in the EU who act like sultans in a harem full of Balkan eunuchs.

Rehn also calls for “cooperation with the Hague Tribunal” as a precondition for stability. What absolute and utter nonsense? Rehn represents international justice where some states are more equal than others. Justice does not permeate from a “diktat” enforced by ad hoc Tribunal serving the interest of American and private capital, Serbians are a proud people as their action in WWI and WWII testifies and they will again eat acorns and stinging nettle rather than be a party to blackmail.
I strongly believer in International Law but not when it is applied selectively and used to punish one group acting in self defense in order to justify the criminality of those who instigated, aided, abetted, and participated and still participate in the .biggest crime that ended the Twentieth Century.

Putin seems to be walking in the steps of Tsar Alexander who proposed the Holy Alliance for Europe after the Napoleonic Wars. Europe rejected the Holy Alliance concept because it represented equality based on Christian values of brotherhood. rather than continuation of Great Power domination The tsar like Putin today who calls for observation of International law was dismissed as being “off his rocker” and Putin is dismissed as being a former KGB agent and consequently does not have a moral right to point a finger at the immorality of his adversaries in Europe. Those who want to dominate the world tell us that only ideas emanating from the Empire need to be considered no matter how unjust that might be.

Nationalism as a form of self identification is a positive thing but when it becomes chauvinistic then problems develop.Serbia has every right to legally defend its territory so if the EU wants apart of it let them compensate the Serbs ten fold.$100B should suffice.

Olli, don't flatter yourself. The Serbs saved themselves from nationalism. Not the EU, not the UN, not the US. Serbs are perfectly capable to seeing who is an ultra-nationalist and who is not in their country. Otherwise, the DS would not have 36 seats in the January election. Still, it's nice to know the West still regards itself as the civilizers of a people that would otherwise eat their young and drown kittens if left to their own devices.

Victor, isn´t it interesting, a Croat is teaching us here how much alive serbian nationalism is, while Serbia is arguing with the rule of law, the UN-charter and other international legal-treaties and agreements.

Don't forget that Albanians are some of the most nationalist in the Balkans. Probably more than the Serbs. And even Greeks. This is something that affects all nations in the Balkans, or at least most.

The Americans and Europeans simply don't understand the region. Not at all. What they are doing is not diminishing nationalism, but giving it more power. Their policy is making the people more angry. Had America and the EU went into the Kosovo negotiatoins and treated both sides equally, and truly tried to find a solution without being biased, then both sides would negotiate. However, the US and EU has given the Albanians no reason to compromise with anyone. This has created many more nationalists for a future war. And the Serbs are feeling like victims, and they too are becoming more nationalist. Like I said, the US and EU should've told all sides "You must negotiate in good faith and find a solution. We will not take one side over the other. We want to see what is the best solution." Instead, their policy has always been one sided and now they are talking about how the nationalists almost came to power. It is their own fault.

I too would become a nationalist if I saw my country constantly being picked on and treated like garbage. This is human nature for any nation and any people to turn more militant when they are constantly being treated with injustice.

Eu saves Serbia from nationalism! This is a poor analysis. I am sure Mr Rhen know very little of the Serbs history. Once nationalist, always nationalist. And it is the same with the Croats and the Bosniaks. The three ethnicities were dreaming of a strong new state for their people, they could not come to an agreement because of their extreme nationalism, and we know what happened.

Actually, the Serbian is very much alive and it will take very little to awake it. The bear is dozing, but not asleep.

My God, either these EU and US people are dumb, or they are seriously the most short-sighted politicians since the days of Old Europe. Yes, the nationalist party leader didn't stay as speaker, and yes, the Pro-EU governments did form a coalition. But do these EU and US people really believe that it will remain this way after they try to snatch Kosovo away from Serbia? Do they believe that the people will not turn against them and vote into power the nationalists? Or maybe even a coup might take place. Who knows. Maybe it might stay Pro-Western for now, but not in a few years. One thing that is certain in the balkans is that nationalists, FROM EVERY COUNTRY, eventually get into power when the West turns its back on them. The US is especially notorious for promising to help nations, but then when they are done with what they want, they discard them. Serbia may be pro EU now, but in a few years that could change. So what's the good? Just a delay?
