These people get paid to state what has been obvious since the dawn of time, that nobody cares about Serbs or Albanians.

Bush still believes Russians can be bought to heal. Bush plays poker with very weak hand whilst Putin plays chess. The question is who will backdown, the answer is neither. US can't recognise Kosovo without a UN vote, otherwise it will fall foul of UN's 1244 resolution. A country that is seeking tough UN resolutions on Iran, which then abdicate its own responsibility will loose all credibility. For EU this is worse. Kosovo could break the UN, but the biggest looser if that happens will be the US and EU. What may replace it, may not yield the same power to US and EU. Under these circumstances what would happen is the US will try to push the Kosovo to the background and the statusquo kept. The question is will the Kosovo Albanians stay silent! And how much with the US tax payer will be asked to pay for their compliance ?

“During the visit, Putin guaranteed Koštunica that Russia will veto Kosovo’s independence, and he vowed to help Serbia with its security, energy and economic needs,” the analysis continues.

Over the past century, Moscow has promoted itself as the protector of Serbia, however, when the Kosovo war began in 1999, Russia had neither the political clout nor the internal stability to stand up to the West, according to Stratfor.

“But things have changed. During the past few months, Russia has made every effort to demonstrate to the international community that it is stable and strong enough to re-emerge as a global power,” the analysis concludes."

After a decade of being dismissed by the West of being of no consequence, it must be gratifying for the Russians to turn the tables of them. And to have the eternal gratitude of the Serbs.

There is a more practical reason too: Russia doesn't want a pro-West, pro-Nato Belgrade. Look at the map of Europe -- Serbia is the only obstacle now standing in the way of the entire Danube river and region becoming a Nato preserve.

Bush will be gone in a year plus. The Kosovo situation will still be going on. He seems to be doing things he believes will help his legacy now. Note the 180 he did on global warming at the G8.

I pity his successor, what a mess he/she will inherit.

Russia is supporting Serbia because international law is on their side. Russia will not be part of robbery and stealing land from a soverign state.

Russia is against double standards.

Russia wants full implementation av UN resolution 1244 first and then discussions on Kosovo status WITHIN the framework of international law and the UN-charter.

Should this be so hard to understand for these so called western analysts and commentators??? If so, they are doing a really poor job.

"It is quite possible that U.S. President George Bush’s open support for Kosovo’s independence at a time when Russia was against it, meant nothing, British Balkan ananlyst Tim Judah told BBC Monday"

yep, first time I agree with this pseudo-expert.
it means nothing.
the issue can only be solved within the UNSC.
USA simply can´t decide on that question.
Albanians are desperate, they believe anything as it seems.

by the way: I saw that thing on tv: they really stole Mr.Bush´s wrist watch! ...well Mr.Bush, you know who did it, right? =)

To Svetlana who masquerades as a Serb.

Why should the posters in this thread dream on? When what they say makes sense and stands to reason? Its over.... NO independence, but I guess you will never accept that until Bush actually says it which he will never do thus the game goes on for weeks, months and years longer.

Vrnjak & Tesla,

I completly agree with both of your comments!

Also worth noting is the so called "Balkan analyst" Judah who far from being analytical has been off the mark again and again recently - maybe he should stick to writing books rather then offer cuurrent commentaruy that is way off!

Russians have been stating their case for the past year and that these so called analysts are now "surprised" at the Russians is really the only surprise. Putin has stated that her will be no Independence and so it is highly unlikely that Bush and Putin will agree at the July "chat" without one or the other backing down! All Bush has done is to have raised the stakes but Russia has all to gain while the US has much to lose! Some Russian sia d a few months ago "the US have created a self closing trap" - I guess I know who I'd place my bet on for future realities!!

Russia is not trying to 'prevent' anyone to 'deliver' anything because simply the USA cannot deliver something it does not own. Serbia's constitution cannot be rewritten in Washington or Albania by anyone. Do you copy this? The USA is in breach of rule of law and UN charter by using psychological war against a sovereign country with no legal justification for it whatsover. What Russia is doing is absolutely right. They are trying to put negotiations back to Serbs and Kosovo Albanians in order to find a settlement that is acceptable to both parties. Russia is back confident and stronger than ever. Whether you like it or not.

I honestly cannot remember a time that a Stratfor prognostication has turned out to be correct. In my experience when Stratfor proclaims an insight into back door dealings and their future consequences that it seems almost a given that the exact opposite will occur. Stratfor hasn't been worth the price of membership.
