Strategically placed and hidden security cameras and/or a neighborhood watch, plus more plain-clothed guards might help catch the culprits before they steal.

This type of crime is spreading across Europe.

In the UK copper cables are being stolen from railways. These are thick heavy cables and are worth quite a bit of money to the thieves. The cost to railway companies however is a hundred times greater than the value of the copper. The cost to the public is a thousand times greater still.

To stop this type of crime (or is it vandalism?) then the punishment must be related to the damage done to all those affected. The cost to the public and businesses of having their phone lines disrupted could be millions of Euros. If so, then those responsible should be suitably punished.

This is a major crime and those who commit it should be jailed for at least 10 years. This would quickly put this game to an end.
