This 'carrot' is of the very small kind you find the frozen food section of your regular supermarket. 'May', 'could' etc. is just hedging. The Serbs have to offer something 'acceptable' for the next mini-carrot to be offered in vague terms.

The EU should take out the biggest carrots imaginable for the Balkans before it talks about imposed political status solutions. The EU works great as an economic/free trade zone but it has not politically matured to the point where it can unanimously agree on a political topic as sensitive as the dismemberment of a fellow European country.

Victor,

I totally disagree with you. I can’t see how isolating or punishing Serbia would any good whatsoever.

What purpose would it serve to deprivie another generation of Serbs of their hopes for a brighter future? It´s measures like this that feed desperation and extremism.

Serbia is a frail democracy and fortunately the positive forces are the ones in power. One has to appreciate the difficult task they have balancing between the pressure from the outside world (e.g. the Kosovo and ICTY issues) and the threat of internal extremism gaining power.

So let’s cut them slack and give them some credit for what they do. The EU needs to support and reward any positive development in Serbia, strengthen the ties and work towards an eventual EU membership for Serbia. That would bring stability to the region and a better life for the people of Serbia.

I don’t know what you agenda is, but a better future for Serbia is obviously not one of your top priorities…

As far as Mladic I concerned I’m convinced he will end up in Hauge sooner or later.

Cheers,

Carl

The fact remains that the EU is in a total mess regarding it's failure to adopt a new consitution and unless this is resolved there will be no new countries accepted in the EU due to it's own self imposed limit of 27 which was filled by the accension of Bulgaria & Romania.

Even Croatia is losing patience regarding the EU's inept ability to resolve the issue and as such EU accession has been stalled. Talks of joining are scant assurance of actual actions!!!

so oli, why did you stop them then without any reason??? kostunica is pm, so this won´t help. there´s only ONE way for judicial security of the billions of eu-investments in serbia: acknowledge the terretorial integrity of serbia or negotiate with ds about the weather. btw, you need all 27 voices for restarting the negotiations and britains investments in serbia are poor and they have connected kosovo with eu-membership. why is he once again promissing things he can´t influence?

«EU may soon reopen talks with Serbia»

This is a bad idea! EU should open yalks with Serbia the day after Mladic would be delivered to The Hague, and not before. EU has to remain very resolved with Serbia and not give an inch... otherwise the Authorities will view such an attitude as a gain for them and a weakness for the Union.
