I have also worked with many families from the Balkans and many were of mixed marriages from Croatia and Bosnia as well as from Kosovo. They were expelled or they had to leave fearing for their life just because the husband or the wife was Serbian. Many Croats divorced their Serbian or Muslim wives and refused to recognize the children of the marriage. Slavenka Drakulic a Croatian writer propagandist who was married to a Serb writes in one of her books and gives advice to her daughter who was in school in Vienna that she should choose between her Serbian and Croatian grandmother. Talk about sick people. No you are correct Victor not all Kosovo Albanians or Serbians from Kosovo are farmers I have also met computer programmers and teachers from this region. The Kosovo Albanian family that I speak of lived in BC not the Prairies in an apartment where several families from the Balkans lived –Serb, Croat and Muslim for whom I translated. All of these families have stories to tell like your acquaintance from Bratunac. One of the men (Serb- Muslim heritage) that I know who is married to a Croatian woman was used for target practice by his former Croatian neighbors just because his wife was Croatian. It is this kind of mentality that I write about above and I am sure that it exists on all sides and it has been my experience it is predominant in the Croat Diaspora more so than the Serb Diaspora and I have seen it at work in my community.. . As for your comments Artan “Reliable evidence of criminal sophistication is provides by Michael Lauber, head (in Switzerland) of the fight against organized crime has said: The Kosovo Albanians and Albanians “operate in the greatest secrecy. It is very difficult to get information from them during inquiries because they are grouped in small closed clans - almost in families comparable to the old model of the Italian mafia.” An officer of the Italian ROS (the elite operations section of the Italian gendarmerie, specializing in high-risk anti-mafia actions) has said: "The Kosovo Albanians are among the most dangerous drugs and arms traffickers. These men are determined, violent and capable of the worst” [---] To keep in trim they burgle homes and businesses every night while constantly being on the move from one part of Lombardy to another.5
Where does this originate? It originates from a clan society that is prevalent among Kosovo Albanians and Albanians. It all has to do with Kanun, honor and vendetta. “In Albania, more so in the mountainous north of the country, there survives in an almost chemically pure form (due to the constant isolation of the country throughout the twentieth century) a traditional Mediterranean clan society, respectful of ancestral traditions of honor and vengeance. For most of the mafias these rules and laws are implicit, passed down by word of mouth. But in Albania the code of honor or Kanun is written down and the brochure that contains it is on sale in newspaper kiosks” in Kosovo and Albania. So Victor and Artan I am sure that not all Kosovo Albanians or Croats have divorced their wives but all the ones that I know have forced them to convert. If you know the story of Solomon and the two mothers claiming the same child you know why they converted. Need I say more?

ofcourse there is an kosovar identity, about 100 years of serbian oppression formed it.but i agree, kosova is just an artificial partition of the whole albanian lands under the serbian(yougoslavian) rule, made from your state,i guess why?!
and i agree that the only 100%right solution for kosova would be the unification with albania, but unfortunately this is not possible,at least not now.but independence is,when they are not allowed to live with their brothers why should they live with serbs?!

«Several years ago a family came to my home town in Canada from Kosovo and they were given a modern apartment to live in and within a week they had chickens and a goat in the apartment with them. Need I say more?»

What part of Canada is this? The Prairies? I do not believe you. You are trying to portray people from Kosovo as ignorant peasants with no brain and no culture. You should be ashamed and excuse yourself.

I am working daily with people who came to Canada during and after the Bosnian and Kosovo wars, and they are all decent people whom I have learned to understand and love dearly. A Bosniak told me this week that « his nights are still torn apart by memories of the terror he faced in Bratunac as the MPs guarded his bus.»

These people are humans just like you and I and don't understand why you seem to be so racist, perpetuinf the view that Kosovar Albanians are a sub-race.

Matthew you write that “The 2004 riots were a spontaneous expression of the anger of the people” . I think it was more a riot caused by people who do not think historically they only think for the moment. They use their convictions in absence of knowledge. These convictions are derived from clan mentality which does not respect diversity of human dignity. Convictions like these do not find expression in ideas and respect of diversity of the human family but in destruction of culture, drug trade, white slavery and vendetta. Several years ago a family came to my home town in Canada from Kosovo and they were given a modern apartment to live in and within a week they had chickens and a goat in the apartment with them. Let me see if I can understand the logic here. The 2004 riots were a spontaneous expression of the anger of the people and not in any way controlled by the state of the leaders of the Albanians in Kosovo? So how can he ensure it won’t happen again?

Either 2004 was uncontrolled violence and might happen again, or it was controlled and directed by people in authority who have the ability to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

You can not have it both ways.

The implication here is that 2004 could have been controlled but wasn’t.

"We Albanians are patient."

- again the crux of the matter is clear the US & UK talk of supporting an independent "Kosovar state" but in reality there is no "Kosovarian" ethnic identity just a blatant land grab by the neighbouring nation of Albania - even more reason why Sediju will need even greater patiencxe seeing as he is waiting for something that will never happen!!!

Nah, he's smart enough to realize that if March 2004 repeats again there will be war. He and his fledgling government can't afford a war.

Jovan

well, in march ´04 it was the albanian-controlled Kosovo-TV, that has created the anti-serbian pogroms. I´d like to know who will believe mr.sediu, after what Albanians did under the eyes of the international community.

he either doesn´t know what he is talking about, or he´s a simple liar.

Pijetro

Of course, it's easy to promise and repeat that March 2004 won't happen...

The bigger picture is, how many have returned after the riots, and what's been done to bring them back?

THAT'S concrete proof...
Words are empty if action isn't shown...Even IF there's good intent on Sejdui's part..
