I’m Montenegrin, but consider myself a Serb first and foremost and am married to a Bosnian Serb. I supported Montenegrin Independence, not because of any dislike of Serbia, but because I believe as a small country with a tourist based economy that it would prosper better on its own. I strongly believe Montenegro needs to avoid the EU and all its regulations and focus on developing alternative tourism as it will not be able to compete in luxury and service with Croatia and Italy. I believe they should follow a Las Vegas/Amsterdam style of tourism and in that they would be highly successful and able to integrate and reform organized crime into productive capitalists. I do believe Montenegro should work to repair ties with Serbia and work more closely with them, after all there are more Montenegrins in Belgrade then in all of Montenegro. I traveled all around the Balkans and many many “Serbs” admitted to me that in reality they are actually Montenegrin. My understanding from speaking with average Montenegrins that the current government is highly corrupt and its difficult to even get a job if you are not a member of the ruling political party.

Well, Montenegro is being bought off by Russia... which I think is good news, but perhaps some would disagree with me.

If a new war breaks out, then montenegro is in a good position as it would avoid war. The post-2000 regime has pretty much ruined the army, so Serbia can't defend itself. Also, montenegrins inside of serbia were not allowed to vote at the referendum, yet foreigners went to montenegro to vote... not democratic if I am asked.

Thanks for that quebec article btw... it's good.

Yes I like how the article mentioned "according" to Montenegro 55.5 voted for independence. I like Montenegro, but not a separate Montenegro. Serbia-Montenegro long live to a reunion. Don't let the sellouts sell you out. As a radio host in America says language, culture, border define a country, yes that would be the same for Serbia and Montenegro. Ziveli Srbija-Crna Gora, jedan jezik, kultura, i granica!

As someone who has part Quebecois heritage I agree that Quebec should have the right to determen its status as a sovereign state.

Such an arrangement would closely pattern Montenegrin independence ironically, as we all know Montenegrins used Serbian hospitals, schools, and pension funds even though they live in another state. This is a rather ambiguous sort of independence if you ask me.

An independent Quebec has been proposed by Quebecois sovereigntists to include seats in Canadian Parliament, the use of the central bank and currency, free access to social service such as schools, hospitals, and pensions as well.

The political realities are that the EU and NATO wants small weak Balkan states they can dominate in an imperialistic fashion- thus Montenegro is a good candidate for independence. Quebec on the other hand is a territory of 7.5 million in an anglo-dominated continent with 325 english speakers so it cannot maneouver itself to independence easily.

Too bad because Quebec (except parts of Montreal) is really quite different from the english speaking parts of North America and is considered to be the closest thing to Europe outside of the continent!

Quebeccers and Serbs have a very similar mentality of living as second class citizens under occupiers. They are known in Canada to be very tough, stubborn people- just like Serbs.

Je me souviens!-I will remember! The national phrase of the Quebecois remembering the english conquest at the Plains of Abraham is very similar to the battle of Kosovo for Serbs- a battle remebered and celebrated as the reason not to give up Quebec's distinct culture to english conquorers.

Victor,
Most regions want to succeed due to oppression, lack of rights, unequal distribution of tax wealth and resources.

In Quebec, they receive greater rights in law and language, which are guaranteed in the constitution; much more revenue from Canadian taxes than they pay into; and full revenues from resources such as mining and electrical creation.

The Quebec scare of separation is just that – a scare tactic, built on nothing more than an emotional desire. Designed to claw more money from the rest of Canada. They have it too good to leave.

Mike is correct in saying that with more immigration, the "pur laine" vote will be diluted.

Beware of the English propaganada! It's just as devastating as the serbian one!

People who immigrate to Quebec are in a vast majority from France, where my ancestors came. Now we have a look on immigration and we make sure that those who come here understand well the problematic.

It seems you don't!

So by your rationale Victor, Serbs in Montenegro, Bosnia, and Kosovo have that same right? Or does it only work when it suits your own interests. If you apply it to all, that's fine. If you apply it to none, that's also fine. If you apply it to some but not to others, that's dumb.

Incidentally, you may want to check this little article out on your own province of Quebec.

Thing are just not looking good for you today, apparently :)

I wish them well. All ethnic groups should obtain independence when its members decided that it is the wish of a majority.

I wish to see the day Quebec is declared an independant country. It will also mean the end of Canada as it is.
