JOE,
I wish your comments here are read by many people in here. You are absolutely right and summarised perfectly well the Kosova isssue. Those who can't see it either don't want to see it or don't want to accept a realilty. Kosova is actually independent since Nato entered in the country. Now some people are so sad and desperate that they want to it still under Serbian rule even only on papers. Kosova reality is different one as there was a ethnic cleansing there by Miloshevic regime and and secondly the UN has been there since 1999. These are the facts.

Joe,

A short response to you:

You have met no Albanians.
I presume you have never been to Kosovo.
I do no know if you have met any Serbs who llive in Kosovo.
You are Americanised, which suggests minimal to no knowledge of Balkan politics.

Therefore, your views do not have any credibility at all!

What if the Hispanics wanted to vote for secession in one of the souther stats of the U.S?

Zoran, please have mercy on us. Do not "restate" the usual serbian state propoganda, that according to resolution 1244 Kosovo is serbian, blabla, blabla.... Each of you repeated it thousand times. You seem to believe that repeating it with arrogance again and again you will be able to keep Kosovo at least on paper as part of Serbia. Let me tell you few things to to streaten you out:
- A lot of people who desagree with Serbs on this forum are not necessarly Albanians as you try to make it believe. I am not an Albanian and I never met one but I have a deep sympathy for them. Me and millions of people will never forget those TV images of burning villages of ethnic Albanians and their brutal expulsion into neighboring countries.
- Resolution 1244 is not something eternel like a law of physique. It will be replaced by an other resolution and you will not like it at all.
- I own several nice pieces of real estate both in Europe and in America. I can see them, live in them, enjoy them. I can exercise my right of ownership. But can Serbia exercise her right in Kosovo? Will she ever have this right again? The answer is a resounding NO. So get used to the reality, wake up. Move on.

My father is from Montenegro and he is very worried about the albanian separatist movement in Montenegro. It would be very bad for Montenegro if Kosovo were to be independent. As well as for Macedonia and Greece who also have large militant albanian populations.

As a Montenegrin whose family were nobility, I can assure you that we are in fact Serbians. In addition, no one cared more about Kosovo historically then the Montenegrin people. Our Epic poetry is one of the major influencing factors behind what many here discount as the Serbian "Myth" about Kosovo. In fact, my family directly participated in the first play ever conducted in Serbian, an adaptation of the "Mountain Wreath" but our greatest poet and leader Njegos.

Please do not speak for the Montenegrin People if you are not in fact Montenegrin. We care just as strongly about Kosovo as any other Serb, if not more. If the Montenegrin government is not making as strong a stand on the issue as the Serbian government, it is merely because it is trying to improve ties with the West and does not reflect the feelings of Montenegrins in Serbia and Montenegro.

I personally do not see what we "owe" the Albanian people. If you do an internet search you will find websites dedicated to Albanian secession movements in Montenegro. If Kosovo is to get independence, it would set a dangerous precedent for Montenegro as well. If anything the Kosovars "owe" Montenegro for letting so many refugee's seek safety in our lands during the crisis of the late 90's, and they pay us back by trying to carve up Montenegro.

Obviously, since Montenegrins control the government and most of the corporations in Belgrade, its rather silly to assume that we feel any differently about Kosovo then our Serbian brothers. In reality, there are more Montenegrins in Belgrade then in Montenegro!

Let me explain the obvious to my Albanian fellow blogers. Their is a major difference between living on a piece of land and owning it. Kosovo is Serbian land that Albanians are living on. This fact is held up by international law, state soverignity and res 1244. You can't want what is yours if it's not yours, that's called coveting or stealing. Does everyone now understand the obvious truth or should I restate it again?

Of course this is Montenegro's position- they don't wish to upset Serbia because then they might jeopardize their free university, hospital, and pension privelleges which should have been revoked following the referendum.

Of course with an estimated 200,000-300,000 Montenegrin citizens living in Serbia (mostly declaring themselves as Serbs and without a right to vote in their birth country) and 200,000 Serbs in Montenegro itself who are pro-union- it is easy to see how the Montenegrin government could think Serbia is easy pickings for their exploitation.

Perhaps in 50 years or so after the economic migration of the pro-union element in Montenegrin society, and a high Bosniak/Albanian birth rate, Montenegro will become part of a new Balkan confederation of Islamic states also comprising Bosnia, Kosovo, Albania, and Western Macedonia.

I think they deserve this honour!

According to data from '03, only 7% of Montenegro population are Albanians. (ref: www.diaspora.cg.yu/html/popis03/NacijeCG911.htm)

Zoran,
Albanians do not take anybody's land. They claim just what belongs to them.
Montenegrins owe a lot to thier albanians so they better support them.

Zoran,

Did you ever ask yourself why there is no nation that wants to live with Srbia, no matter federation or confederation, loose or not?

Johnny, Portugal

pre 17 godina

"If they had any sense they would at least join with Serbia in a loose confederation"?! Nobody with the slightest sense would do such thing, that's why they left Serbia for good. Being with Serbia is being stuck in the past with backwards people with backwards notions who elect backwards governments that make backwards decisions and whom apparently enjoy being seen as backwards by the rest of Europe. Wake up and smell the coffee.

Joe

pre 17 godina

Zoran the last link between Montenegro et Serbia was like a loose confederation. It did not work. No link seemed to work between Serbs an Montenegrins even though the Montenegrins are practically Serbs too. The reason is very simple: the Serbs are bent to dominate the others, even the Montenegrins. In the XXI century nobody can take it anymore.

Zoran

pre 17 godina

Looks like Montenegro has taken the same stance as Russia. It would not be in their best interest to see a independent Kosovo because they also have a large Albanian minority. If they had any sense they would at least join with Serbia in a loose confederation before the Albanians gather enough power to take their land too.
