"Slovakia and Romania are small fish, MR. The EU's main engine (read: Britain, France and Germany) are in favor of pushing forward a UN resolution, providing a legal basis for the declaration of independence by Kosovo's Parliament.

Serbia must be hopeless counting on the support of 'friends' like Romania...they've just joined the EU by the way...I wouldn't expect them to want to make trouble for the main EU powers.

You are right to talk about big fish and small fish ..... no prizes for guessing which category of fish the ex-Yugoslav countries will belong to when they join -- that's why I don't understand all the fuss about joining EU and becoming a 2nd class member in it.

But on one point you are definitely wrong. Serbia is not counting on anyone in EU to block Kosovo's independence. Her eyes are on Russia and China. She doesn't need anyone else in the UNSC.

it´s really very intersting how all those european countries are beating time by giving statements like the spanish minister...
since Slovakia has pushed a resolution in it´s parliament to oppose independce, and today Romania expressed it´s unchanged position that "the Kosovo status solution should be in accordance with basic principles of international law which must respect sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, inalterability of borders and individual rights for national minorities" like the romanian president Trajan Basesku himself has said.

so, I would really like to see this alleged "joint" EU-positon...

once again, news that do not seem to have real importance.

"The EU will also deploy up to 2,000 personnel in the territory to take on police and judicial tasks. The report said the EU mission would have 'executive powers' in both areas to deal with the prosecution of organized crime, inter-ethnic strife, border issues as well as crowd and riot control."

This last part of the article is the most important. I'm beginning to already see cracks in the Albanian solidarity - between pragmatists who will accept the Ahtisaari Plan on one side, and nationalists who want immediate self-determination, organized criminal elites who have their own militias and fiefdoms, and rouge warlords on the other. The greatest threat to stability will not be conflict between Albanians and Serbs, but Albanians and other Albanians. The EU better realize that it needs to set up a network of development beyond just the "green zone" of Pristina.
