You are absolutely correct konstantin gregovic. It seems like a double standard. The natural resource and capitol investment robbery regarding their position on Kosovo certainly won't help either. However, environmental rules and requirements does create jobs and opens another economic opportunity. Serbia just has to make sure it places Serbia first (manufacturing and work contracts). It seems to me that, if the EU is really serious about this, they should offer grant money. We won't call it war reparations.

RE: EU Standards-Environmental-How the EU has forgotten

NATO did the following during illegally bombing YU in 1999:

(1) Targeted the refinery plants of Pancevo which turned the area into an environmental disaster.

(2) Hit various industrial and fertilizer plants in and around Belgrade causing an environmental disaster area in the Danubian plane. Thousands of dead fish were found even in Romania.

(3) NATO was prevented from hitting the Vinko Nuclear Research Site, Serbia largely due to a mass world appeal.

Environmental standards do have to be met , but the EU must foot the bill.

The EU and international community didn't care when it destroyed Serbian refineries, petrochemical plants, and bombed the Danube bridges. EU countries, with the U.S., created an environmental catastrophe.

Much of today's problems are due to the damage sustained to Pancevo and other parts of Serbia due to the bombing.

Why didn't the EU donate repair equipment and money or genuinely help clean up all the pollution from the bombings if it really cared?

I think they just like putting up burdens and hurdles on Serbia and its economy.

Serbia/Yugoslavia used to be an economic competor before all the bombings and sanctions. In construction and the defense industries it outbid Germany and the U.S. for contracts in Iraq, Pakistan, Kuwait, certain African countries, etc.

The attitude of MR is exactly why Serbia will not get in the EU. Don't you WANT your children to live in polluted free environment. Have you been to Belgrade yet?.. or Pancevo? People are dropping like flies because of pollution and toxic waste. I welcome change, improving our enviroment only will enhance those lives of the people who live here as well preserve the beautiful landscape we have here. Does anyone really believe that the executives of NIS are barely making ends meet? They are just one example of how the are destroying this country!!

Why should serbia adopt the policies of the EU concerning environment. One we are a developing country and the average pay here is 1/10th of those in the west. Let the EU pay - they're industrialized and rich, doing this would be another burden on Serbia and would slow economic growth.

Serbia will probobly be an active participant in the European Carbon Emissions Trading Scheme if it gains entry into the EU within the next few years.

Investing in the latest environmentally friendly technology might not always be realistic for may companies. Serbia could be a buyer of emissions credits or it could alternatively invest in offsetting projects in the developing world.

The latter of the two could be the best economic option, as Serbia would be able to build more diverse economic partnerships.
