Let's not be naive!! Of course when slowly ascending from ground zero any type of improvement looks significant. Serbia has lost so many opportunities because greed, corruption and misuse of power. I clearly remember when a French superstore wanted to come to Belgrade and one of our top business men(who no one can speak his name) personally sabotaged their arrival. Afterall, how could his under the standard chain compete. Serbia is more full of lost opportunities, unfortunately you have to live here and be able to see through their ruse of lies, cheating, thievery and corruption. Articles like this just support the status quo and that's what those holding the purse strings want.

I think that investment by Multinational Corporations on Serbian soil should be welcomed, but not necessarily relied upon completely. For, yes, these companies will create additional jobs but, nonetheless, at what long term total cost? In essence, my fear is that Serbia will turn into a version of some Asian nation if Multinational Corporations are the basic economic strategy. My view is that the goal of every corporation is profit. And if making profit means degrading the local environment (with especial emphasis on Shell), providing inadequate wages, and treating workers like dirt, if you will, then so be it.

What I think Serbia should focus on is education and research and development so that the nation can provide an environment for high skilled, entrepreneurial people to flourish. Thus, while employment is certainly important, I think that Serbia would do well to promote white-collar work within its borders to avoid the fate of Mexico or China, for example. In turn, then, Serbia can promote its own industry and create its own Multinational Corporations (which will benefit the Serbian economy more in the long run) that will abide by Serbian law instead of relying on some foreign Multinational Corporation that may sign a contract to not obey basic Serbian environmental and/or labor regulations. Thus, in the long term, foreign Multinational Corporation investment cannot be the solution in my view.

This shows clearly that the economic reforms that have been implemented have significantly attracted Foreign Investment to Serbia. The Business Summitt is a good venue to help improve the economies of Europe, and what is especially needed is jobs.

The Government needs to continue on it's path of economic stability. The economic reforms embarked upon several years ago have began to yield a dividend.

Yes, the dividend for good economic management is greater Foreign Investment, low inflation and low interest rates, and more jobs.
