When is anyone going to understand, let alone Carla del Ponte, that while decent enough governments will try as far as they can to accomodate justice and human rights, their basic remit is to protect the interests of the countries they govern.

When Germany pushed for premature Croatian and Slovenian independence in 1991-2, they were not doing it because their citizens were shedding tears over these countries - they did it for, as the German foreign minister, Hans Deitrich Genscher himself said quite openly at the time, for German interests. These interests were carried out after that nation's reunification and as a test of their strength without the Russians to worry about, and even where it meant supporting known Nazi sympathisers such as Franjo Tudjman or religious fundamentalists like Alija Izetbegovic. Justice was never part of the equation as far as former Yugoslavia was concerned, just as it isn't with regard to Iraq.

Mrs. del Ponte's concern for international justice may be honourable, but she needs to understand the real motives behind how and why nations act as they do.

What everyone needs to know is that everyone, yes even a Serb is innocent until proven quilty in a fair trial. My assessment is that the ICTY is not a fair trial, but it is political, and the ICJ confirmed this.

Had everyone said that Serbia is innocent of genocide until it was proved in a SLIGHTLY IMPARTIAL Court of Law, then a much malicious slander would not have been spoken. This malicious slander only compouded the situation and those who spoke it are responsible for the consequences of that malicious slander.

Carla Del Ponte said she had strong evidence and put on a stunt by writing to all the EU leaders. If her claims are genuine then she should just have given the information to Interpol and they would have made the arrests. She would not know what justice was if it was explained to her. She is just there to say that Serbia is not cooperating with the Hague to keep Serbia from joining the EU, even though she has no proof for what she says.

When one is (undoubtedly very well) paid to do a particular job that amounts to absolutely nothing after an eight-year tenure, comments of this nature are to be expected. Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Carla.

When will Carla learn already? as tough as she talks she seems naive into thinking that European countries will show back bone against war criminals or crimes commited in their continent.
Europe will bend backwards to facilitate serbs, in the same way they closed their eyes during croatia and bosnian war. That would have happened in Kosovo had it not been for the US.
Wake up Carla and stop relying so much on european governemnts. There is a reason why they have had such little say in world affairs for the past 50 years (except for UK)
