For all of you saying all sorts of things about Hungarians living in Vojvodina: We, Hungarian people have lived there for a thousand years. Serbs were nowhere to be seen back then. Vojvodina is ancient Hungarian habitat. It is okay that it belongs to Serbia now, just treat us as friends. The same way we treat ethnic Serbs in our country who have their own schools etc.

Lazar, I understood Ida's comment to be that he spoke to someone from Vojvodina who was half Serb and half Hungarian. He wasn't saying that the demographics are 50-50 as you seem to think.

Lazar

Ida, you are totally wrong. Less than 20% of vojvodina's population is hungarian and only several of the municipalies have a hunagian majority. The Hungarians are a small minority in Vojvodina.

Krajina refugees would be sent to Kosovo, not exactly the richest part of Yugoslavia. Now Kosovo refugees are being sent to Hungary. Seems like a pattern to me.

The plight of the Serbian refugees is grave indeed. Even must, if not all, of my very liberal and pro-Western friends in Belgrade seem to have negative opinions of them and complain about the massive numbers that fled to Belgrade. They face extensive discrimination at the grassroots level in Serbian society so of course other ethnic groups are going to shun them as well. I will elaborate on this if any Serbs are truly unaware how badly these people are viewed and treated in their own society.

This is one of the most important issues for Serbia today and going into the future. The Politicians must stop using them as pawns in their games and do what’s right for them and their future. All the while the International Community simply buries its head in the sand in regards to their suffering and their rights. It’s truly disgusting and shame on EVERYONE for this.

Every country should have a sensible immigration policy. We only need to look at Kosovo to see the potential dangers of seismic demographic shifts in population. However, these people are internal 'Serbian' migrants and are entitled to settle where they please in Serbia.

Serbian citizens who are Hungarian are free to live and move about all of their country of Serbia. The same right goes to the Serbs, who have founded the state of Serbia as the state to defend and progress Serbian people and all who live and share with us in their progression.

Its disturbing to see that DSVM thinks more of the "social problems" for the town, not concidering that these people have lost everything in Kosovo. Futher wherever they settle, the same "social problem" would exist. Seems they just want to throw the weight on another ones back.

And "ethnic structure"? Would they have objected if these "settlers" came from Belgrade, Nis etc? Cause i was under the impression that a serbian citizen can live wherever he wants in the state...

The Hungarians have a very prosperous coutry right next door with a per capita income 3 times that of Serbia's.Why are there 100k Serbs living in Hungary and 300k Hungarians still living in Voivodina?

Ida, you are absolutely correct. After communism took ahold in Hungary they were fleeing outwards. Yugoslavia was the "liberal" communist state others strived for. I hope they are only concerned about economical consequences and not ethnical balances. I think they should remember they are living in Serbia and they were invited into Serbia and have not been discriminated upon! I think there life in Vojvodina is much better than in Hungary!

It seems to me that everybody is running Serbia exept the Serbians. How dare the Hungarians say where Serbs can live or not live in there own country! Serbs are on the verge of becoming like the Kurds who have no country and live under the oppresion of others. Wake up Serbs, you are becoming an endangered species.

I was told by a Vojvodina 1/2 Hungarian, 1/2 Serb, that Yugoslavia/Serbia allowed 150,000 Hungarians to settle in Serbia after the 1956 Hungarian revolution. I think the Hungarians need to be reminded of this and how they weren't discriminated against when they had to flee their country and settle in Serbia.
