Macedonia backs Kosovo plan

some sources claim that ethnic Albanians make up as much as 40% of Macedonia's population. With the much higher Albanian birthrate, Macedonia may become an Albanian majority state within 2 generations. It will then be the turn of the Slavs to want constitutional guarantees.

Mecedonia should serve as a model for the rest of the region as a state that has managed to make all the people living in it happy. The uprising of Albanians was to seek for equal rights as they were treated as secondary citizens during the communist era and little had changed after Macedonia became independent. The fact that Albanians have fully integrated in the Macedonian goverment shows that their uprising was indeed to seek equal rights rather than as some claim to creater a 'greater albania'. I wish all the best to Macedonia and hope that it achieves its long awaited dream of joining the EU.

People say that the communities are more divided up than ever in Macedonia with clearly defined Albanian and Macedonian parts of cities.

And many Macedonians can't go back to the homes in northwest Macedonia, which they had before the war, due to ethnic cleansing and violence upon them when they return.

A visitor to Macedonia said 2 years ago, on the border with Albania, that Albanians were regularly coming over to steal and loot from the remaining elderly Macedonians living there. That there was no protection by the Macedonian police and army there.

Additionally, Macedonians claim that the percentage of Albanians is significantly lower than 25%, but that their government agreed to western pressure to say the numbers were higher.

The west forced a long delay in releasing the statistics after the census - a delay long enough to tamper and falsify the statistics.

this is simply a political move. the macedonian government is afraid that if it doesn't appease the albanian population, the same thing will happen there very soon.

the vision of a greater albania is stronger than ever now. so, macedonia can expect the same thing within the next decade, regardless of its current actions, from 'separatist' groups staging acts of escalation in an attempt to force the government into armed action. then, the claim will be that the poor people are being 'cracked down on' and suppressed.

at that point the international community will get involved, macedonia will be partitioned, half to the albanians and their greater albania, and half to bulgaria, finally resolving the dispute with greece over the name.

The only reason Macedonia will recognize is because the Kosovo proposal has wording that says Kosovo must legally recognize all surrounding states in their current borders. And that puts an end to further problems in Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, and elsewhere.

Macedonia should be ashamed of herself, for siding with the same people who tried to destroy her in 2001. I'd rather side with my brother then my and my brothers enemies. Just because sometimes you argue with your brother doesn't mean you send him out to the wolves. What's worse, Serbia not recognizing the Macedonian church or Albanians destroying 1/3 of the country in 2001? Macedonia has an identity problem and an ethics issue.

I have spoken to many Macedonians and have a few Macedonian friends here in the US and not one of them would agree with their government. But what can you expect when almost half the country is practically held hostage by the Albanians and their short temper.

"1.8 Kosovo shall have no territorial claims against, and shall seek no union with, any State or part of any State."

I'm pretty sure they support it because it might keep their country intact.

There are Macedonians at the Hague for War Crimes against their Albanian population too.

There is a great deal of tension in their country too.

How bout Serbia recognize the Albanian region of Macedonia as an independent country and Albania could recognize the North of Kosovo as an Independent Serb country. Net gain for Albania.

I would like to point out that the last paragraph of my comment was intended as merely a joke, and B92 edited it. I put in a “hee hee” to show it was a joke and I believe they thought I was laughing for some inappropriate reason. I fully realize what would happen if such a scenario played out. I very often suggest things just to see the reactions. I think every single possible scenario should be discussed if only for the reason to be prepared and calm for whatever happens.

Also to Joe, the reason the birthrate is so high is because of poverty and lack of modernization. The Albanians in Macedonia who have a Western European standard of living also have a similar birthrate to their Western European neighbors. Children in rural areas increase the workforce, in white collar areas, children are expensive to educate and raise. This is true the world over, regardless of ethnicity.

Well Well Well, Why do Alabanians call themselves Alabanian when they are born in Macedonia. I say that any person who cries that they are integrated and living in peace in Macedonia while waving an Alabanian Flag is stiring the pot. Respect the laws of the country you live in.

Albania would be first to recognize the independent states of Kosova, Sanxhak, Preshevo, Bunjavac, Prespa, Manastir, Chamerie and of course northern municipality of Mitrovica Serbs in Kosova. It's only fair.
