The proposal to let those who are totally opposed to the UN Chater and United Nations Resoultion 1244, and who had seven years to conform to European Standards and yet not not come any close to meeting those Standards to join the UN is insane in the extreme. That has to come very close to being one of the most pathetic jokes I have ever heard.

Ahtisaari is an old man. I think that a younger person should start again and come up not with a daft proposal that nobody can work with, but with a draft proposal that can be the foundation for the start of further negotions and compromise as the UN Security Council Resolution 1244 DEMANDS.

Spain had a civil war, and yet it stayed together because the Spanish people knew that a multi-racicial and multi-religious Europe was the only way to go.

Despite all this there are those in Spain today who would turn the clock backwards; namely the Basque seperatists movment. The Spain Government quite properly and courageously oppose these backward looking terorists, and this is why Spain totally backs Serbia's position on Kosovo as being an integral part of Serbia.

blag: "we're gonna give you most favored trading status. 0% debt. everything you need for quicker development... and then we're gonna watch you walk away from it."

Why didn't you do it during the 80's or 90's? Can you spell H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-S-Y?

Abdul Haziz,
you should thank Kosovo and UN for serving there, earning who knows how many thousands USD a month, while those Kosovars with better skills and qualifications than yours are untill now not allowed to run their country!

hermon,

if you read his comment very carefully, shukri's comment is hardly an invitation from a good neighbor. "We are going to forgive the serb nation" is meant to incite a reaction from serbs. Fine, here goes. This is a typical albanian tactic. Have the albanians been forgiven for their horrific, gruesome conduct during the balkan wars, wwII, pre-war Kosovo, progrom of 2004, destruction of churches, etc. etc. etc. Be very careful how you interpret peoples' comments.

senka

pre 17 godina

It's funny how all the comments I've read above only emphasize the Serbian opression against Albanians, but everyone seems to forget that towns in Serbia are crammed with fleeing Serbs from Kosovo! I wonder why that is?! It must be bacuse they were treated very well down there. As a Serbian, I will celebraete the inedependance of the province too; who needs that remote, underdeveloped, troublsome, savage populated region anyway?

blag

pre 17 godina

of course we're gonna put a 'Rambouillet' over you. we're gonna give you most favored trading status. 0% debt. everything you need for quicker development... and then we're gonna watch you walk away from it.

Nick

pre 17 godina

Funny how blag is trying to pull a 'Rambouillet' on us. Trying to make the Albanian side appear radical, just as the albanians did in 1999.

After 10 years of bloody conflict and the death of hundreds of thousands at the hands of the Serbs, blag still believes he can play the old serbian "we are the poor, the victims, the christians" trick.

Your attempt to list the three major factors legalities, precedent and viability are clearly designed to make the issue appear "technical" when its anything but that.

For us, the Kosovar Albanians, its anything but technical, Kosovo to us is about our HOME our FAMILIES our HONOR.

Too a weak mind these factors that i mention may seem as over-emotional, when in fact they are what really matters.

We rose up against Serbian repression in the past and we will do so again whenever it is necesary. We will not live under the Serbian yoke whatever the cost.

But of course i wouldnt expect someone who has rarely even seen his home (like blag and many other Serbs here) to understand that to us Kosovo is anything but a matter of legalities, precedent and viability.

Valdet

pre 17 godina

To Iowe,
Don't act in a childish way tryin to put in a same box USA and Serbs. Everyone in the world is familiar with Serb-Russian friendship(ally)in one side, and USA+friends VS Russia+friends.
Also when you talk about holy religious places, don't forget that religious objects doesn't belong only to one nation, but to the specific religion. In this case Decani Manastir belongs to all the orthodox nations including orthodox Albanians, Greeks, Macedonians, orthodox Arabs, Russians etc.
If your answer is negative, than try to explain here what is your atitude for other christians like catholics, protestants etc.?

It is very interesting that all the patriotic Americans say that they should defend what is theirs. Yet, when others want to defend what is theirs then they are labelled as being hardline nationalists.

Can people tell me what is the difference between a hardline nationalist a just a nationalist?

If America says that Alaska belongs to America and we will try to keep it are they being ultranationalists or just nationalists? If America says that that who ever wants to can have Alaska are they being nationalists or traitors?

J.S.

pre 17 godina

How has the last seven years really benefited the Albanians of Kosovo. It has become a black hole where no sane buisnessman will come. As much as I honestly hope things improve for you no matter what the final status will be, do you really think that things will improve for you if Kosovo becomes independant?

It could be that the real motive of Ahtisharri's proposal to have the EU stay there a long time will give the Albanians the extra time they need to finish off what was started in 1999 with the blessing of EU and NATO; namely a completely ethnic Albanian State. If I suspect that this was the real intention since before 1999, then I am sure that everyone else has thought this to be a real probability too.

The EU and NATO want Serbia to join them against the Muslims in Afganistan, but if Kosovo becomes independant then I would urge Serbia not to succumb to this temptation and have nothing to do with NATO now or ever. The Islamists of Kosovo are happy to keep so many NATO troops occupied in Kosovo for as long as possible, because this way they can not go to Afganistan or Iraq or even possibly Iran.

But I worry for holy places like Decani. These ancient and beautiful places are powerful symbols of the Serbs and their religion, and should remain under Serbian control to reassure the Serbs. As an analogy, I can't imagine Muslims agreeing to turn over Mecca to, say, the USA or EU or Serbia.

Hashim Thaci's party was killing moderate Albanian politicans. There was even a threat made to Ibriham Rugova and family and they were put under Serbian Military Protection by Milosevic himself.

Agim Ceku was involved with the UCK and was a mercenary with Ustashi in Operation Storm. He is also involved in the killing of over five hundred Serbian AND Albanian policeman in Kosovo between the period of 1992-1999.

the more we give them in the negotiations... the more we can re-position them as radicals when they refuse the offer.

they can have all the financial freedom they want within te borders of serbia... and this battle is about three issues:

Oh my Godness ! Hermon mentioned that getting rid of Serbia will give birth to a healthy and wealthy Kosovo ! Just a reminder, the Kosovo province is a craddle for organized crime which is being exported to the rest of Europe especially ! I dont mind that you get your independence, I think actually Serbia is better off without Kosovo Albanians, but keep in mind that the International community will demand from you that you will have to manage more of your own costs. And the rest of Europe will start sending back some of your fellow countrymen that are filling up the European prisons.

Arben - "you also believe that you won the war in 1999".
Firstly Mr T Blair specifically said that it was 'not a war', but apart from that let's look at the facts. Kosovo is not independent and Serbia still has legal ownership of the province. What did you win? What did anyone except the mafia win? You do not have independence and I doubt if Mr Ahtissari is going to even use the 'i' word. America would love to hand over independence and walk away but they've stumbled into the realisation that this is not legally possible. Nor is it viable for many practical and diplomatic reasons.
No-one ever wins any war, especially innocent people from all sides. I really hope that violence doesn't start again.

Dardan

pre 17 godina

What everyone must understand is that Kosovars are winners regardless of the outcome. Let’s look at the positives (instead of negatives) for once.

First - that there will NOT be any type of Serbian police or army ever in Kosovo under any kind of agreement. This means that the area will no longer be covered with blood like it was throughout the 20th century.

Second, the fact that Russia (who until recently denied the existence of Albanian majority in Kosovo and blindly supported its Serbian brethren) is saying that the proposal must be acceptable “to both Belgrade AND PRISHTINA”. Keyword here is Prishtina. If Prishtina says NO, Russia will not enforce it. This is the first time in history that Russia is actually asking the residents of Kosova what they are asking for.

Third, Ahtisaari is not proposing a “final status” that will be it and will last forever. This will most likely be a status that will pave the way for a final status. If it is “conditional independence”, the conditions will most likely be the presence of EU and NATO to protect the Serb minority, and it will pave the way for a full independence from Serbia.

Geting rid of Serbia will be a really mature ejaculation that it will give birth to a healthy and wealthy Kosova.

In this case Decani Manastir belongs to all the orthodox nations including orthodox Albanians, Greeks, Macedonians, orthodox Arabs, Russians etc.

if you read his comment very carefully, shukri's comment is hardly an invitation from a good neighbor.

GOOD. we want them to access world financial institutions. we want them to manage all their own finances. we want them to have a lot of freedom. we want to give them most favored nation trading status with serbia. we want to provide no interest debt.... but we don't want to provide independence.

the more we give them in the negotiations... the more we can re-position them as radicals when they refuse the offer.

they can have all the financial freedom they want within te borders of serbia... and this battle is about three issues:

1. legalities
2. precedent
3. viability

RE: Hashim Thaçi and Agim Çeku are not war criminals.

He is also involved in the killing of over five hundred Serbian AND Albanian policeman in Kosovo between the period of 1992-1999.

the fact is that the albainians want kosovo and by making complaints are slowly tearing the country appart. all serbia did was send police to its own country to protect its people that were being attacked by albainians. you must understand that before judging you have to look at each side.
Do you realy think that whoever the bad guy was in this war considered him or herself to be the bad guy. there are 2 sides to every thing and many times neither side is right.
before you say oh this guy is just some idiot who hates albainians and americans (which is not true) CAREFULLY consider what i have said, be open minded. you can only but respect serbia's cause when you see both sides.

I wouldn't place too much credibility on sources who speak only on condition of anoymity. Its only a few more days to January 26th anyway.

People my god, it has not been released adn you listen to all the big shots and news outlets who will report the news as they see fit to sell papers. You watch on tv about bombings and killings in Iraq but do you hear about schools opening, public works project being completed people actually working and Sunni and shia cooperating no you don't. Don't always believe the news, we have heard independence, then broad Automony and conditional independence. What for the proposal, Arben, Blag, Princip, Prof Naim, ???? and the other commentators. Then we all can comment argue, curse and cry when it is made public only 2 more days.

After 10 years of bloody conflict and the death of hundreds of thousands at the hands of the Serbs, blag still believes he can play the old serbian "we are the poor, the victims, the christians" trick.
