My wife is from Vukovar, and her mother and grandmother still live there.

I have visited them with her in 2001, 2003, and 2006.

It will take a very long time for this city to recover, and it will probably never be like it once was, as Vinkovci and Osijek have taken up much of the buisness opportunities lost by Vukovar.

That being said, from my American view, I think there is a lot of room for a new beginning in Vukovar, maybe with the next generation, the kids who are around 15 years old right now.

Tourism, intermodal shipping, and possibly manufacturing could revitalize Vukovar economically. But it is only possible if these kids are taught tolerance and respect for other human biengs, regardless of ethnicity.

Dean Thomas, I'd like to chat with you on my next visit.

I am an ex-pat living in Vukovar, and have relocated my family from UK to live here. Our family has roots here and suffered during the conflict, through capture, torture, seperation and other ghastly things that no human being should be subjected to. The storys of the actions of both sides of the border are grim, and need to be listened too to gain a fuller picture of what happened to this amazing City. What is needed here is jobs, to create wealth and restore the peoples feeling of pride, importance and prosperity. A dynamic approach to promoting the benefits the Governement offers inward investors is desperately required to ensure enterprise returns here. It requires balls to deal with the red tape and what are seeminlgy deliberate attempts to deter investment in this city. This city needs to breath again and only by changing their approach to enterprise will this be able happen.

I have invested the last year of my familiys life here into something that will give the people something they can appreciate; I have created 25 jobs, that will at least help 25 families support themselves, and this triggers a chain of other wealth and sustinence for other people. I am willing to assist anyone go through the hassle that business faces here to ensure we make a difference, and possibly force change.

What on earth has Vukovar 1991 have anything to do with Jasenovac WW2?

Serbs need to own up once and for all what they did in Croatia and stop drawing pathetic parallels with something that occured 60 years ago.

Ida, you should stop insulting our dead. I still to this day have a relative missing. He was killed by Serbs on the day Vukovar was captured.

Serbs that inflicted crimes still walk the streets of Vukovar but my none of them will tell us where his body lies.

"They were hiding soldiers and not official patients." Ida, if they were soldiers, they were under the protection of the Geneva Convention. Have you heard of this Convention? Many of these injured soldiers were patients, according to Serb soldiers' testimonies, were carried out of the hospital, beaten, because they had defended their nation against the enemy. Please, read the facts and stop this propaganda that nobody listen to now!

My thoughts are always with these people who suffered and who lost there lives, both Adults, children and babies, people who were forced to live in horrible conditions in Camps, shed, tents and lorry type metal containers, driven fron there homes in hours and minutes, taking within them just plastic bags carrying there personal items.

But now they carry those scars and memories of the past, but they fight on for the future of there children to be brought up in a peace and friendly enviroment.

I would very much like to take part in 2007 November 2007 celebrations, i would like to display pictures and photos with stories of our convoys that visited many refuggee camps in cluding Gasinci bringing help and support to as many as 8,000 people, if you can help me by puttingme in touch with people who can help me in Vukovar on my arrival and grant me permission to display this exhibition i would be please

People, croatia didnt use ustasha symbols in early nineties. in fact symbols are same now as they were after independene. do your research on the symbols and u will find ustasha had a distinct "U" on the symbols. now where was this used in early nineties?

Lovely arguement Jack. So by what u imply is that now Bosnians, Croats and Kosovars have a right to seek revenge on serbia. Jasenovac etc happened over 60 years ago and you dont see Polish, British, French etc killing Germans. Noone considers that because frankly its insane. None of the people in Vukovar were responsible for Jasenovac. Nor can the young relate to it because it didnt happen in their time. But ppl love to relate to it and identify themselves through it. But whatever makes you feel a victim is fine, just remember that serbia will be remembered as a last country in europe to practise some form of fascism. But taht will pass too, and lets hope there is no repeat of insanities that happened.

It is not a matter of Jasenovac Jack, but Vukovar. It is a day that the Croatian people shall never forget, but will move on and always attempt to work towards peace.

And the cycle of violence continues…

Face it people, Serbs and Croats have more in common with each other then they do with the rest of Europe.

Serbs are making an effort to comes to terms with the crimes that were committed in their names. That’s a start. If that had happened after WWII, maybe we wouldn’t have had such a brutal war in the 90’s. I’m sure you realize Croatia’s use of Ustashi symbols during the 90’s did not help calm the Serbian reaction.

We need to focus on making sure these sorts of crimes do not occur again, or it will tear apart the EU. Croatia needs to outlaw the use of Ustasha symbols and condemn Tudjman for the war criminal that he was, he is not a war hero. Croatia also needs to stop celebrating their war crimes as national holidays, like Operation Storm. Serbia needs to comply with the Hague and prove its ready to take on its nationalists.

If the differing sides do not learn to deal with the mistakes of the past, we are doomed to repeat them. The war destroyed the lives of the common people on all sides, the only people to benefit were the gangsters and criminals. Is that the future you want for your children and grand children?

The Balkans have suffered enough, its time to end the cycle of violence and act like a modern country.

They were hiding soldiers and not official patients. They were all military-age men and they weren't listed on the hospital admissions records.

And some of the names on the list were people who'd died in the war earlier, so Croats were padding/inflating the number.

Victor

I do not forget but today is the commemoration of what the Croats have suffred because of what the ICTY called a "criminal enterprise" responsible for so many killings in Croatia, especially on this Day.

Victor

pre 17 godina

It's in Vukovar that the serbian troops showed the mot its inhumanity when 300 patients were removed from their bed and executed. I SHALL REMEMBER.
