We are forgeting that Serbia is now landlocked, hence at a huge economic disadvantage since it is surrounded by hostile neighbors. Not a very pleasant situation to be in.

Now, Serbia finds itself in the humiliating position of grovelling hoping to join NATO. How easy Serbia forgets the bombing by NATO in 1999, an event that has crippled the country economically. Its future seems to be dependent on the mercy of the West. Russia, whom serbia has traditionaly relied on seems unable or unwilling to extend any support, economic or moral.

"NATO's decision not to including Serbia in Partnership for Peace was seen as a rebuff to Tadić, who has taken a big risk since becoming president in 2004 by supporting membership in NATO. There is persistent resentment among Serbs over NATO's 1999 bombing campaign in which Serb targets were attacked to stop the ethnic cleansing of Albanians living in the Serbian - controlled province of Kosovo."

Why is Tadic so keen for Serbia to join Nato when the Serbs are not in favor because of 1999? Nato is not an alliance of equals. The first class members club in Nato belong exclusively to US, UK, Germany, France and, to a lesser extent Italy. The others are second class members, or to be more precise, servants of the first class members. Be your own master Serbia, don't become another of Nato's servants.
