That was beautifully said, Anthony.
But who says their will be 'minimal economic growth'? If we look outside the EU box we do find other options.

The choice for Serb voters is difficult. On the one hand a party who want the pipe dream of EU membership. To those i would highlight the case of Romania and Bulgaria. Both these countires have acted like obedient dogs for 10 years and they still dont have full EU membership rights. In fact both countries citizens will be severly restricted in their rights to work in other countries. Unlike the Poles who have flooded the UK work market. Serbia would enter the EU in 15 years and as a 3rd class member.
The other party wants the bombastic, proud Serbia of old and risks isolation. It will take Serbia no further on the path to economic growth but cannot be accused of being a puppet for richer nations.
National dignity is something dear to the Serbs. Is minimal economic growth worth selling the nations spirit? Serbia has learnt to live in hard circumstances. The Serb nation has adapted and it is now the norm. The average Serb will vote for Radical party, As long as he has bread and Kosovo a Serb can thank God.

The tide has turned and now we see Serbian national pride re-emerging thanks to our good friends in Moscow. The radicals are the voice of serbs around the world whereas the democrats are a wanna-be EU members party, desperately wanting to please Washington and not to mention Brussels. The radicals are as popular in Serbia now as the Democrats are in USA and I think that history really does repeat itself regarding the election outcome, I mean look what happened in America, well you figure it out.

Well said Oliver. I just dont want a party to take power in Serbia and not defend Serbian interests in Kosovo, Bosnia, etc. Where there is justice and we are right, we should defend ourselves.

Sidi, let's suppose hypothetically that Ahtisaari is proposing autonomy for Kosovo and not independence. If that were revealled before the elections, I feel the SRS would be even more galvanized for victory over the DS. The SRS could claim victory over the territorial integrity of the country, that it stood up to international pressure, and that it's main goals were fulfilled. Result? No need for further negotiations with Europe or the Hague. By dangling the unknown prospect of Kosovo in the face of Serbian voters, the election makes the outcome for a pro-Tadic victory all the more urgent.

Agree with you, Oliver. Moreover, I think the so-called Radicals, eternally in opposition, are very useful to whoever runs the affairs, providing a prompt excuse for its actions. It's the same game as Eltsin/Putin vs. Zirinovsky

It is not easy to know who are the democrats and who are the radicals in Serbia.

OK now please explain this: If the status that Mr. Ahtisaari will propose is not independence, but some form of autonomy within Serbia, then WHY did he postpone it until after the elections? If he revealed his plan before the elections, and said that Serbia is to continue to have sovreignty over Kosovo, then that would not help the radicals very much, now would it? It is very obvious what he is going to propose, and that is why he postponed his poroposal. Independence!
