Finally the first sign from the United Nations that Putin's influence internationally cannot be underestimated. Ahtisaari will have to rethink his premeditated policy on Kosovo as yesterday on the news I watched with utter joy how South Ossetia voted for independence from Georgia in a referendum backed up by Moscow. Ceku is realising slowly but definitely that independence may never come and it is frustrating his counterparts in Pristina and Tirana in their seven year goal of creating a "Greater Albania". As the saying goes, "Too little, too late". This is my last article as politics can be exhausting JA ODOH

What about Cyprus?

The issue of Northern Cyprus has been put on the back shelf for right now. The was illegally invaded by Turkey who have broken international law by continuing to fortify and build up with Turkish military.

This is an illegal state and is not recognized by the UN.

A newly recognized Kosovo will ignite the Turkish to pushing for recognition of Northern Cyprus.

It is funny how the economy is flourishing on the Greek Side of the border and floundering on the Turkish side.

Agim, I read a lot of history, particularly of this region. I just tend to avoid Albanian propaganda that's passed off as history that would see the Western Balkans as one large part of unclaimed Albania. You should too, since you usually post intelligible comments. Everyone's got some crazy claim to someone else's territory, but just because some claims are coming from Albanian circles doesn't make it any less ridiculous.

Great, so is there any point in these status negotiations? If the albanians in Kosovo are going to declare independence regardless, then what's the point? People talk about Serbia causing trouble but atleast they've been somewhat contructive in their approach. They're willing to give Kosovo the most autonomy, short of independence. I thought the whole point of negotiations was to come to some sort of compromise. I don't see the albanians doing this, for them it's either independence or independence.

Koha Ditore daily writes today that Kosova Unity Team is ready to declare Kosova's independence if Kosova does not come out as an independent state at the end of the status talks. This seems to be plan B of the Unity Team in case plan A fails, the newspaper comments. In the first debate aired by RTK, the five members of the UNITY Team, President Fatmir Sejdiu, Prime Minister Agim Ceku, Assembly Speaker Kole Berisha, PDK Chairman Hashim Thaci, and ORA Chairman Veton Surroi, stated that independence is the only outcome of the process. They even explained the time when independence may be declared. "The Unity Team would gather at 10:00 am to sign the statement. Kosova Assembly Presidency would gather at 11:30 am to approve and sign the statement. If the Assembly President was hiding the secret, he will invite us, MPs, at 12:00 pm for a plenary session where the independence of Kosova would be declared. The first state will recognize us sometimes in the evening," Surroi has said.
However, none of the members of this Team could say which would be the first state that would recognize independence, the newspaper reads.
According to information published earlier in Koha Ditore, the US will be among the first to recognize Kosova's independence.
The message convoyed by the Unity Team was "we will make Kosova an independent state this or next year."
They accepted that elections in Serbia could postpone the process, but they cannot delay the essence and decision on the status. They were even proud of gaining the support of the international community for their vision, Koha Ditore adds.

oh yeah, can´t wait to see who´s gonna take that serious. the us and great britain will quite sure trade kosovo for their billion-investmens in serbia (in this days there won´t be a unilateral game like 1991, where the serb was the bad guy, but his money was good enough for stealing throug "sanctions"! today this game can be played in both directions), or half of ukraine, or the 3 post-iraqui states, or half azerbaidschan, or half georgia, and so on!

the funny part of it: beside all this indiependence-trash-talk, it´s still the serbs who are the dreamers!

Spot on Mike.... lets not stop there. Time for the Basque region and Catalonia to have their chance of Independence. The French Basque region and Corsica to follow. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to vote on Independence rather than devolved power. Lest we forget the majority minority cities in the UK such as Leicester (city states existed in Ancient Greece and medieval Italy). Then, as you mentioned, Epirus in southern Albania and numerous other minute small and rather perplexing areas and regions of sovereign nations.

Abu you claim that you are Arabian, but you must understand that we are nor brothers and will never be. Getting back to the article, yes Kosovo will declare independence and it will be recognized by major western countries inlcuding all developed countries through out the globe.
Serbias election will not have any impact on this issue.
Mike: Greece has no claim to the land in southern Albania, but Albania has the right to claim norther part of Greece where Chams live. I don't think you are aware of that. Read some history, but not the one you wrote.

Neh...you might think and wish, but the fact matters...Kosovo is a legal part of the state of Serbia. Period. I am 100% sure that albanians in Kosovo will be very surprised when they realize that their media and politicians have fooled them. NO ONE else have ever said that Kosovo will be independent. No one.

two more weeks and the world will see the newest independent state.
Because they are unable to decide, kosovo people will, and after that the point of discussion will be individual states to decide what to do.. free choice..
at least on 28 november i will rise my flag and proclaim independence, as many others will do the same..

Cool. I guess Mr. Ceku won't mind if other unilateral declarations of independence take place as well - Republika Srpska, northern Kosovo, hey, about the Greek enclaves in Albania? I mean why should Albanians have all the fun of self-proclaimed self-determination? Give others some fun too!

If the solution proposed by ahtisaari is independence in disguise (perhaps not using that word in deference to Russia), then the United States and Britain will urge the Kosovar Parliament to declare independence so that these two countries can immediately recognize Kosovo as such. Then dozens of other countries in Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and SE Asia will follow suit and also reckognize independence. Thus Russia will be left looking useless once again, and will be forced to eventually give up on its threats and ask for some other concessions instead. Case solved!
