All the talk is about Serbia's need to get Mladic and as regards Turkey all the talk is about getting Turkey to acknowledge its massacre of Armenians before accession to the European Union.
Well, as Europe well knows, one of the biggest and most brutal massacre was of the Serbs by the Croatians in World War II - why no apology by Croatia before it is allowed to join the EU - many hundrds of thousands of CIVILIANS were massacred because they refused to be converted to the catholic faith - this was not a minor infraction - it was a highly organised genocide and is documented - the best evidence is actually contained in the vatican library - one should real the catholic theologan writer's book called "Hitler's Pope" by Cornwall and you will see what he says about the issue.
It is grossly unfair and discriminatory to be concentrating all the fire at the Serbs when the Croatians committed this gross massacre on mainland Europe and everyone has CONVENIENTLY or DELIBERATELY chosen to ignore equally moral injustices and atrocities by nations protected and assisted by the catholic church.
This grossly unfair situation should be put to Europe and an acknowledgement of the massacres demanded of the Croatian authorities just as the Germans have had to do the same whenever they committed similar genocidal atrocities against the Jews.

Always the same biased blogging here. Albanians only point out Serbian war crimes, while ignoring the ones committed by Ceku and company (KLA). Just because the EU and NATO gave him a free "Get out of jail" card, for peacekeeping purposes, does not mean he has no blood on his hands. The muslims and Croats in Bosnia did their fair share of atrocities too. Ask anyone that lives there.

I agree completely and greet this initiative by this student association and I think it should be supported by your government. I also think this should expand to other serbian military and police officers who are still alive and participated in several wars all over ex-Yugoslavia. This is the best way for Serbian people to cleansing war criminals without having to send them to courts, and to face its past. This way, all war criminals will be declared dead, and you can conserve them for some better times (when there will be more wars in which they can give their contribution with mass killings).
I also agree with Matthew and Dragan. Serbia doesn't need to join EU. And there was not any common sense among international community and they have made it possible there to be wars all over ex-Yugoslavia. It was not because of the serbian nationalism. Serbs also should not care about Tribunal because it is biased. War crimes in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosova were done by aliens, it was not serb military, para-military and police forces who did those crimes against humanity. It is only this way and no other way how Serbia can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I don't think that Serbia has the will to deliver Mladic, and he will certainly died as Pol Pot in Cambodia, before he answers to the genocide he has committed.

Dear Anthony Shelmerdine,
it is obvious that Kostunica is hoping that Mladic could die before getting arrested by Serbian authority.
In this way the Serbian Government would not have to deal with potential unrest by Serbian nationalists and could try to persuade the EU and the Hague Tribunal that the Mladic arrest is no longer an issue.

i think that 5 years is definietly not enough to proclaim someone like mladic being dead.i understand the reasons of the students, they'd like to do something-get it over finally, but if they want to do something about it,to protest they have enough and they want this problem to be solved-they should rather turn to putting more pressure over the government to find him and not making the easy way out by proclaiming mladic is dead which is a shameful way.

Matthew, great comments, i completely agree, if the west trully wanted Yugoslavia to be together then they would be just like basque and catalonia in Spain.

Dragan

Why should Serbs care about the Tribunal? Any court that releases Nasir Oric, who is about as big a war criminal as is possible, is a joke. This court has proven time and time again, by its actions (which are too long to list here), that it is completely biased against Serbs. The Serbian government should not even recognize its existence. The Serbian people have nothing to be ashamed of and have never supported fascism, which half of Europe did support, including Croats, Bosnian Muslims and Albanians. Why should Serbs be judged by such dubious characters as these?

Matthew

pre 17 godina

Why would Serbia even want to join the EU? Nothing good for Serbs ever came from the international community. Besides, the EU is bloated and enlarging too fast without proper standards in place. By the time Serbia is ready to join, she will only be allowed 2nd class status. Remember these are the same people who carved up Yugoslavia without thinking about the potential problems. Does anyone think it makes sense to break up Yugoslavia and create a bunch more countries just to have everyone join the EU? The war could have been avoided with a little common sense on the part of the international community.

That being said, for the good of the Serbian people, Mladic should turn himself in. A true solider would turn himself in, guilty or not, for the good of his people.

Andrea you're backtracking and it does you no credit. To think that any leader would get political idea's or policy from an independent student organisation is insane and unlikely in the extreme.

I find it rather incredulous that you believe that Kostunica is waiting for Mladic to die? Pray tell how you are party to such sensitive material and the innermost thoughts of the Serbia PM? Maybe you'd like to share your source with us?

As for banning Serbia forever from Europe if Mladic dies before imposed biased illegal international justice??? The EU has allowed memeber states to join over a number of years and in stages. Should Spain have been barred due to the dictator Franco? Should Greece have been barred for its Colonels Junta??? Even my own country (the UK) has a shady past with certain actions that, by your definition, excludes her from EU membership. To exclude Serbia from the EU on this one issue smacks of a contributer with extreme double standards.

Hey people, I know well that this was just a proposal by a student association. I just wrote that, in case Kostunica thought about playing smart and waiting for Mladic to die, the EU should unequivocally state right now that, in case of Mladic's death while still free, Serbia would lose forever the chance to negotiate its EU accession. It's better to be clear, because it's very evident that Kostunica is just waiting for Mladic to die, so that he won't have to arrest him. Such a statement by the EU would cut all speculation in this direction.

Anthony Shelmerdine

pre 17 godina

This is a grandiose proposal by an independent student union. It will amount to nothing. The above contributors should read all the story and not select paragraphs with which to base an arguement. It is not the action of the Serbian government and does not even constitute a motion by any significant number of Serbs. All countries have extremists.

I suggest you read a story, digest then comment otherwise you risk looking more foolish than the members of an independent student union.

so, funny..
if he is 64, legally it should be at least 36 years more before serbia can declare him dead.. and even if he is declared dead this doesnt show nothing to EU, or maybe it shows who really serbs are and they think they are so good at fooling people, and they want to by-pass procedures.
serbia is no exception to this.
remember that serbia is out on parole, and is being judged of its behaivour..

donadoni

but he has disapeard because he is wanted by haage tribunal, not of any other reason.. so according to serbia bin laden is already dead. this is not any excuse, an act of desperation, trying to fool the world, humiliate the victims, and shame on serbia.
do your job and you will be accepted in EU. No mladic= No EU. and Period

Andrea Baucero

pre 17 godina

I think quite the opposite. Since Serbia's precondition for negotiations with the EU is the arrest of Mladic, if Mladic turned up to be dead Serbia should be prevented EU negotiations forever. This should be made clear by the EU, so that Kostunica doesn't think to be smart and doesn't wait for Mladic's death to solve his problem. Mladic should be arrested, otherwirse Serbia should lose forever the chance to rejoin the international community. Stop being smart Serbs, arrest the man and be over with it.
