Hey Mike, maybe it's just a ploy by the EU to get Serbia to hand over Mladic, and once they do the EU will give Serbia the same treatment it's giving to Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey. Or maybe they will turn around and say that they don't have the capability to accept new members. I don't know, but i don't think the EU is that sympathetic towards Serbia.

No, Serbia is behind its neighbours as far as association with the EU goes. The only reason the EU doesn't want Serbia to fall any further behind is because they're probably afraid of Serbia becoming a black hole surrounded by EU countries. Personally, I'm encouraged by the growth of a sceptical appraoch to the EU in Serbia, as opposed to the blind awe exemplified by media such as B92.

It's the reporting and the same empty phrases used by the EU officials assigned to our case.
If they wanted us that bad (or even at all) they would have allowed the talks to continue (see: Croatia) while waiting for Mladic.

Serbia does not need to join the EU. If it does then protective trade barriers will go away, and the country will have to pay a lot to bring things to EU standards. A much better laternative is to join the CES, an alternative to the EU.

Maybe it's just me, or maybe it's the reporting, but it really seems that of all EU aspiring countries, the EU seems to really REALLY want Serbia to join. They seem to be bending over backwards trying to make Serb EU ascension all but a given, whereas the EU seems to be shuffling its feet with Bulgaria and Romania, and practically giving Turkey a cold shoulder. Is this welcoming attitude towards Serbia due to high economic potential, because of geographic location as a virtual linchpin in the Balkans, or something else? It seems that if Mladic were to be handed over today, EU ascension talks would literally begin the very next day.
