First, they declared that they are on the cusp of stopping Nord Stream 2 and Russia would have to negotiate a new gas transit contract with Ukraine. Reality is Russia does not have to sell gas to Europe as its building even more pipelines to China plus they have started to sell liquefied gas to Asian countries more than making up for any losses in European sales.
Next, they declare that if the US signs any deal with Russia curtailing NATO expansion that would be a humiliating defeat for the US and NATO. Yes, it would be a defeat in a way but it’s better than watching Russia roll over Ukraine split it into two parts keeping the east while the EU can have what’s left over.
This would not just be humiliating but a catastrophic defeat that makes the exit from Afghanistan debacle look like kids play.
