Journalists working in Serbia, not only in wartime but, also during peace, were at high risk. This fact is widely known outside of Serbia. Russia is made out of the same cloth. As long as people like Putin are in power, no journalist is safe. The other tinpot dictators in Eastern Europe are safe as long as Putin remains in power. However, it remain to be seen how long this lasts.
