Putin's attempt to modernize the country with the help of the West would thus finally fail.

I agree that Merkel should stop the Nord Stream 2 and then watch German industry move out of Germany on mass. US gas is much more expensive plus they cannot deliver the quantities required to meet German industrial demand. I have no idea who or what is peddling this idea that Russia needs Germany or Europe to modernise their economy because that a fallacy pushed by westerners who still think this is 1960. Hello there is something called China that is far more advanced than the west LOL.

If Germany feels its trade is insignificant with Russia it should cease as soon as possible.

The Nord stream project is a German initiative not Russian and its one mistake that Putin has made because he wanted to have good relations with Germany. It was Germany that went to the Russians asking for this project to be constructed not the other way around.

The Russians will lose nothing if Nord Stream 2 fails since its will deliver that same amount of gas to Europe anyway via other pipelines. Gazprom has much bigger fish to fry such as the pipelines of oil and gas to China then India etc.

What will happen is that in future anything the Russians undertake with the west will come at a very substantial cost to those western countries. Once burnt twice shy as they say.

You can say that for any country in the world mate. If the US disappeared, oh wait you would notice them gone - no more wars. All I said was that it was Germany's idea to build the second pipeline NOT Russia's. The Russians really do not need the EU since the pipelines to China have been built.
