I don't think the general public wants to involve God, and God does not have such a weak evaluation of himself that he feels the need to force himself on those who are unwilling. For example:

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate." (Matthew 23:37)

Rather than forcing them, he leaves them "desolate," that is, forsaken. I think the same applies to the school system. Christian should allow society to school as they wish. But they should raise their children in the admonition of the Lord:

"Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." (Ephesians 6:4)

Private church schooling is probably the best model for Christians.
