It is quite possible for a Taiwanese to chose PinYin latinized spelling for convenience.
But a Chinese from Mainland will never use a non-standartised Taiwanese spelling which would separate the given name in two the way you did with the first half of the given name.
Let's start. Like in Hungary, in all East Asian countries the given name follows the family.
"Aleksandar Petrovic" (originally) became "Petöfi Sándor", reversing the original Serb order.
In China(s) it's the same. Example.
The full name of Lin Yu could be in reality "Lin Yu-chun" or, say, "Lin Yu-ling".
If you use "Lin Yu" that more often than not means for the privacy the last part of the given name was cut off. Which is fine... except that you are most likely Taiwanese.
The above spellings are typical for Taiwan, not for Mainland.
In Mainland the same name would be "Lin Yuqun" or "Lin Yulin".
And I have doubt, someone from the Mainland would cut his / her name the way a Taiwanese would.

The US list of getting it right is not very good so if they pick the wrong enemy they will get their arses kicked.
