The story has own historical twist. Largely, people do not want any of the two evils. But if no other choice, they would chose Moscow over Kiev any time - simply because of the economy.

In addition to that the recent moves by Kiev to eliminate "minority" languages like Hungarian, Slovak, Polish, Romanian, Russian is not a popular move. If taken seriously only a small area around Lvov speaks something clearly "Ukrainian" day-to-day.

People are also concerned with large territories owned by overlords with grave consequences.
