I didn’t do economics at university but tell me which tertiary institution did you study that subject? What are your qualifications?

How better off is someone working in the US as a labourer earning $12.50 an hour? Yes, fuel is cheaper but food is not (I mean proper food not that crap you buy in Walmart or fast food). Good cloths and footwear are very expensive on this hourly rate.

I’ve met Serbs who have recently lived in the US and returned to Serbia. They all react the same; will not say much, but when they have a few drinks they begin to tell the truth. They go over there because relatives/friends tell them of the fantastic life but find out that its not that fantastic. For the smart few their only bonus is working two jobs and saving the money and taking it back too Serbia. Most say that they wasted their time since they spent all they earned in rent, food etc.

Poor quality Husqvarna products sold in Serbia are not due to poor manufacturing by Serbs but are built that way to make them cheaper. Same goes for your Timberland boots which are not made in Serbia.
I know Serbia is poor, but what are you doing there since the US is such a fantastic place where life is so much better?????????

That imaginary professor is far smarter than you mate. That’s why you wash dishes and she lectures.
As I said before mad as a cut snake and twice as silly.

"Well I am clueless, but they pay me a small fortune while you who is very smart till granddad’s land for less than $2 an hour."

I am sooooo jealous of you! ;)

"The conversation was about the $12.50 hourly rate and whether it was a good wage and you go on about Timberland boots and your chainsaw."

Any sensible person would understand the fundamentals of economics but you are apparently beyond help.

"What the $^*# are you doing in Serbia then if its so great in the US?????????"

Again, you missed the point. You continuously try to say that the Serbian lifestyle is basically on the same level as the American lifestyle, and I am only pointing out that what you are saying is total nonsense. I never met a real Serb -- one who actually lives in Serbia -- say such a thing. Only an angry and nostalgic expat or descendant would write such nonsense.

"As I said before mad as a cut snake and twice as silly LOL."

Yeah, you and your imaginary professor friend are...

"JS’s theory can only mean that he compares hourly rates through purchasing power; but this is a ridiculous notion since people living in poorer countries on low wages can be better off and can buy better-quality products since the cost of these items are much lower than people living in rich countries, especially the US. $12.50 is working poor wages in the US and when you consider the cost of rent, food, utilities, transport etc there is nothing left. It is well documented that people on this wage you cannot pay for private medical insurance. What begs the question now? How is someone in the US better off on this hourly wage than a person living in a poorer country on a much lower hourly wage? Living in Canada I know the US very well and the answer is they are not better off. The hourly rate that would satisfy the criterion that working in the US is far better starts at $25 and up”."

Some ultra-nationalists have commented here that we can't compare standard of living because most Serbs don't have a mortgage to pay because many live at home with their families. But that fact in itself proves that they have a lower standard of living because it shows that Americans have enough money for young couples to immediately buy their own place and live on their own. That, in and of itself, is a significant step upwards. If there wasn't enough disposable income, then American people would be living at home with their parents. But they aren't, and that proves my point.

For the fun of it, we can assume that your last sentence is true. But this "commentary" is not specific. For example, what is "much lower hourly wage"? Next, having medical insurance in Serbia is nothing like having medical insurance in America. Have you ever used a public clinic in Serbia? Even in Vojvodina, a friend of mine mentioned that when she gave birth, they didn't even put a clean sheet on the bed she laid on. You are really clueless about what you write about...

JS

@ sj

You again show your ignorance about prices because you quote this friend of yours saying that a person in a poorer country "can buy better-quality products since the cost of these items are much lower than people living in rich countries, especially the US."

It is the exact opposite. Almost every manufactured item is more expensive in Serbia AND lower quality. For example, I bought a pair of Timberland boots a year ago and after two months there was a sizable hole in the side of it. Four year ago I bought a new Husqvarna chainsaw and it gave out after six months of use. Even brand name products here are second class. Plus, we pay more here in Serbia than in the States for the identical model. The Timberland boots cost 15% more than in the States, and that was after the 30% discount I got here in Serbia. Oh, and lets talk about the fuel cost --- 250% of the price in America.

You are the most clueless person on this site.

I agree. However, Serb nationalists do the same thing. For example, sj's logic is to draw a straight line between any problem and the USA. For the fun of it, we can assume that your last sentence is true. But this "commentary" is not specific. For example, what is "much lower hourly wage"? Some ultra-nationalists have commented here that we can't compare standard of living because most Serbs don't have a mortgage to pay because many live at home with their families. But that fact in itself proves that they have a lower standard of living because it shows that Americans have enough money for young couples to immediately buy their own place and live on their own. That, in and of itself, is a significant step upwards. If there wasn't enough disposable income, then American people would be living at home with their parents. But they aren't, and that proves my point.

I agree. However, Serb nationalists do the same thing. For example, sj's logic is to draw a straight line between any problem and the USA. If a cow dies in Tanzania, sj will find a way to blame the USA for the cow's death. If a young man loses a job in Timbuktu, sj will draw a straight line from the job loss to the United States of America. To mix things up, sj even gets so creative that he swaps the Americans out with Albanians. Such intelligent people!
