I understand what China is doing in Serbia and that its target is the EU. I also understand Serbia is a small economy. I understand that China is in Serbia for its own benefit, but the difference is that Serbia can also benefit from China’s presence. China is willing to pay for upgrading existing transport infrastructure plus build new roads, and that is money a poor country like Serbia does not need to find or borrow.
The steel works at Smederevo had to be sold because the government could not subsidise any longer so China bought it at a good price and now its expanding those facilities not closing them down.
China at least brings something to benefit Serbia while the US only offers a new military base at the cost to the country where its located.
60 years ago the US used the same strategy which China now uses. Today, the US has nothing to offer except BS about freedom and democracy.

If Serbia discovered 'China' in 2018, with some investments... China in Albania is present since 1999 or even before.

Little Lenny this railway line is much more important than to just carry passengers between Belgrade and Budapest. Its part of the One Road One Belt plan and its main purpose is to bring goods to Europe direct from China and central Asia. The benefit is that Serbia and Hungary will use it too for the same purpose.
Even Poland has greeted this initiative with open arms. What about Croatia? Not important at all. The Chinese threw it a bone, but only after talks in Dubrovnik next year LOL.

Yes, it's very smart to rely on China, while you are surrounded by either EU or EU-bound countries. As if others haven't tried and seen the limitations of that. Seems like Serbia is resorting to improvisation tactics at this point, instead of doing what it needs to do to come into the European fold and integrate westward instead of eastward.
