No, SJ, it has been 'The United Kingdom' for a lot longer than that...
The full name of the British state is as follows: 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'...The reason for that is because 'Great Britain' refers to the whole of the island of Britain whereas Northern Ireland is part of a different island altogether so is listed separately in the title.
It's understandable that with such a long title people are going to use different acronymic parts of it such as 'GB' or 'UK', or even 'England' as I mentioned before, and which tends to annoy many of us.
