s300s are excellent. Serbia does not need s500s. s400 would be nice, but not necessary. the difference is range. Serbia is small. Serbia does not need to engage targets 300 to 500km away with a s400 system. if laid out properly a few maybe 5 to10 of the batteries can protect the entire country and overlap each other to help them protect the batteries themselves. people think cause something came out 30 or 40 years ago that its junk. There are many updated s300 versions. I guarantee you one thing, NOBODY wants to do bombing sorties over s300s, and nobody is going to even think about sending in f22s and risking a 350 million $ aircraft.

I don't think the S300 is old equipment. I think it has a shorter range and can target fewer planes than the S400 and S500 systems. I think Russia uses the S300s to protect strategic assets. The S500s are used to protect Moscow. The S300s would be a long distance air defence system which could destroy planes flying over the entire territory of the former Yugoslavia. An S400 system could destroy planes taking off from NATO air bases in Italy and Germany. It is extremely unlikely that Serbia would attack Italy or Germany so the S300 is fine for its needs.

Russia would not be giving these to Serbia - Serbia would have to pay 160 million, and they are getting obsolete. Meanwhile Russia is discussing sale of S-400s to Turkey, a NATO country.

160 million is a bargain but I'm sure Serbia will get it for much much less. Look at Romania, where is the $3.9billion for obsolete US missles coming from? Check -> http://www.b92.net/eng/news/world.php?yyyy=2017&mm=07&dd=12&nav_id=101788

As for Turkey, it sees Russia as its protector, not the US along with Bulgaria, Greece and Slovenia. Check -> http://europeanpost.co/natos-bulgaria-greece-slovenia-and-turkey-would-pick-russia-to-defend-them-if-threatened

Commentators,

Serbia & Montenegro's military were able to shoot down a stealth plane, because the old radar was not limited in spectrum, as was the newer radars at the time. That means Cuba's old radar would be able to detect stealth planes.

If scientists are true to themselves then they can get thinks done like the Wright brothers, who eventually ignored the available aerodynamic charts at the time that cost them much time and created much frustration, but learned a lot about human nature.

Seems Russia is giving Serbia it's old equipment. We just pay them to modernise it, like the MIGs. We are then left with the most advanced military in the region. If we could shoot down a stealth bomber with some old missiles, the S300s are very welcome.
