What language was that? You mean the Old Church slavonic language?

3. During Napoleon Wars Russian Danube Army spoke the same language as the Bulgarians, Serbs, Macadonians ect. And it scared the West ...
(slovensrb, 27 May 2017 21:01)

This I am not sure because what you say was SLOVENSKI - the official language og the Great Horde and as a matter of fact of the Ottomans. You were metropoly of the Ottomans but not a colony. So for decades your ancestors used Slovenski in the court of Topkapi and in the court of Constantinopole. The Russian name of the language was "сербский извод церковного языка" but how close it was to the language that Serbs spoke in early 19 century (before the sellout has spoiled the language of your ancestors) I don't know. I've only read several times that the passing Russian armies had no language problems in any of the Balkan states where locals spoke almost the same language. It scared Austria and Britain so they found traitors in every place to reform the languages under the same formula WRITE AS YOU HEAR that automatically has built a small wall between them and the Russians ... Bulgarians refused and made only cosmetic reforms so they still speak almost Russian. They also rejected the idea if a parallel Latin grammar as it undermined their culture and could increase the influence of Vatican.

@Andy

Poor Methodius! :)

A rarely mentioned but beautiful part of Republika Srpska is around Mokro, just outside Sarajevo. Hiking in Bjelašnica is also a wonderful family activity.

Does the state have such an excess of cash that it is available to hand out to businesses simply for using this script? Will those that already use it be offered the cash or just those who agree to either switch or use both scripts? If the latter, I suggest that those using Cyrillic now change to Latin script in order to qualify should the law change.

Thanks JS - a bit of homework to work on my Cyrillic there.

I am dragging the wife and kids to Banja Luka for a few days as part of our summer holiday, so I need to brush up on it.

On another note, I wonder if Methodius was annoyed that Cyril got all the credit.

Cyrillic was actually created in the First Bulgarian Empire, at the Preslav Literary school, in the 9th century AD.

Should be in Cyrillic with perhaps a footnote of smaller text in Latin if needed. Look at what Quebec did a couple of years ago. They basically created a law so that all businesses have signs in French language only. At least this is just an incentive and wouldn't force anyone. Every country in Europe should do as much as possible to maintain their heritage instead of imposing though. You're not creating a country for tourists, you're building a better country for yourselves.

"Serbia's official script is the Serbian variant of Cyrillic, while the Latin alphabet is also widely used. As for the holiday, Vesic noted it was one shared by "all Slavic peoples" - because "Cyril and Methodius, the Greek brothers from Thessaloniki, spread literacy and Christianity among the Slavs."

1. The two brothers were pure Slavs from Moravia and Greek was only was their belief while Thessaloniki was a Slavic city too though with mixed local peoples. Even the name Солоники (Salt makers) is pure Slavic.

2/ The brothers used Slavic/Rus Glagolitsa (глаголица) alphabet to develop Cyrillic. It was best adopted for Slavic (Slovenski) language and it regional dialects. But bastards like Serbian Vuk Karadjic , Ukrainian Grushevsli ect. have spoiled the alphabet and the language.

3. During Napoleon Wars Russian Danube Army spoke the same language as the Bulgarians, Serbs, Macadonians ect. And it scared the West ...

4. I believe that Serbs should refuze from the Latin alphabet and return to the initial Cyryllic that their ancestors spoke before, during and after the Ottomans. This very logical and well harmonized language has made you Serbs and without it you are just southern Slavs with no rootes. Some day another son of a bitch will call you FYOROS or so ... Anyways today we celebrate Cyrill and Methodius Day and I congratulate you all.

We should offer incentives for businesses who protest against the discriminatory policy pushed on us by the nebulous "West" that addresses of Serbian websites cannot be listed in Cyrillic.

Bob

The mix is part of Serbia's identity. It puts Serbia in an advantageous position when dealing with East or West. The motivation to push Cyrillic is unnecessary. Cyrillic is not under threat. Politicos do not need to waste time and resources on this - their motivation is factional and not economically constructive. The democratic choices people make day-to-day in the use of scripts is working well enough.

Serbia does not need to suffer the kind of emotional hang-up suffered by the Croats about scripts - Serbia is much more balanced and has a better outlook on these things.

Why settle on half measures when we can pay real homage to these saints and order everyone to write everything in Glagolitic. I am sure that will go down well with the electorate.
