Johannes Hahn is only spelling out what should have been the criteria for many countries wishing to join the EU, but since Brussels’ eyes were bigger than its stomach there are now big problems where you have too many countries dependent on EU funds to survive. It must be understood that initially accepting countries like Bulgaria or Croatia was not an issue since money was plentiful; then 2008 happened and everything has gone downhill. The EU was scheduled to stop printing money by the end of this month, but now it’s December.
On the issue of Russian influence, Hahn has it wrong. I gather he does not use Russian gas to keep warm or keep his industry going.
Russian influence will get stronger and stronger in the Balkans and if he thinks investment is going to overcome it then he is mistaken. I heard on radio that recent research has found that eastern Europeans have lost faith in democracy as its failed them and they see themselves only as cheap labour. In particular places like Poland and Hungary.
Montenegro will NEVER join NATO. John McCain can rant all he wants and call everyone who opposes it in Congress they work for the Russians, but it’s not happening. The US is a contacting empire while people like McCain behave like Hitler in the last days of WW2, moving divisions that no longer exist.

If Serbians feel ethnically close to Russia, then they must be positively in love with Croatia!

Ethnically the closest are the Poles, Ukrainians and Byelorus who all are simly Russians. But you can see that ethnical closeness is not enough. There must also be spiritual closeness such as between the Russians and the Armenians and the Greeks. From this point Serbs are the closest people in Europe. In 17-18 centuries the Croats made their choice despite everything. So there's nothing to complain for and nothing you can teach us. Rus-Serb relations were tested 3-4 times last century. Serbs and the Greeks are the only Europeans who never betrayed us. When 17 European countries including the Croats sent their military units to kill the Russians Serbs (Montenegrins) made 80% of the partisans on the Balkans and 60-70% of all the resistance movement on the continent. They always chosed the Russian side since 1877 ... And it's not their fault that you had your ustashas ...

However, I am not convinced that Serbs are quite as in love with Russia as a lot of recent reporting has implied. It is not a conclusive state of mind; it is more a case of being an experimental thought process to try to resolve uncertainties about Serbia's identity and its place in the Balkans stuck between two (or more) worlds. This positional dilemma in Serbia is somewhat illustrated by the humerous and ironical saying "Speak Serbian so the whole world can understand you!".

They stuck on this border because they stopped it from moving eastward. In a way Serbs created this border despite the century long terror of the protestant-catholic world. Now they fear that Russia can reinforce this frontier. Of course Serbs are as different as trader Ari Gold and open hearted Dragoljub Djurkovic but the trend is patriotic now. I think Serbia is already the moral leader of the Balkans. Because it's the only nation that never sucked here. In my eyes their main guilt was that they stopped the wars not reaching the victory. Balkans would be a safer place now.

serbs and croats do not get along despite being extremely similar, however i would argue that the hatred isnt really amongst 100% of the serbs and croats. Alot of it gets driven by extreme nationalists on both sides.

I like stubborn people but not the stupid. How many times do I have to tell that I have no answer for this question? Is the spirit inside or we are inside the cocone this I don't know. The idea of the angels and spirits appeared in 17 century when the remaining Angelos Dynasty of Byzantine (Wilhelm of Orlean) seized power in England and gave their family name to this country. This I can talk about but not something that I have no idea of.

I know no nations whom Russia betrayed other than Afghanistan. I think we've dissapointed Serbs when we let their country be torn into pieces. But it wasn't a treason because we were a colony of the USA at the time. Just like all Balkan peoples are now. Except Serbia all the rest are the US K-9 unit that are allowed only to suck and bark. They are objects of the international relations while Serbia is though small but a subject.
