War crimes suspect arrested in Germany

German police have arrested Željko Vrljanović suspected of having committed crimes against civilians in Croatia in 1991.

German police have arrested Zeljko Vrljanovic suspected of having committed crimes against civilians in Croatia in 1991. Vrljanovic was detained based on an Interpol warrant, issued by Croatian police in November 2006, while traveling with his family from Belgrade via Munich to Orlando, Florida, where they all received U.S. citizenship, Croatian media reported Saturday. War crimes suspect arrested in Germany President of the Zagreb-based Documentation and Information Center Veritas Savo Strbac said Vrljanovic moved from the Republic of Srpska to the United States nine years ago. “He came to Banja Luka from the Croatian village of Borovci at the onset of the war there in 1991,” he added. According to Strbac, Vrljanovic came to Banja Luka to visit his father at the beginning of August for the first time since he moved to Florida. He had no trouble at the Munich airport during his arrival. As he was going back to the U.S., the flight from Munich had been delayed and passengers accommodated in an airport hotel where police arrived to arrest Vrljanovic on the basis of the Interpol warrant which names him as suspect for war crimes committed in the Novska region in Croatia.. His wife and children continued to Florida on Friday, while Vrljanovic was remanded in extradition detention. “Vrljanovic’s name was not on the list of those suspected of having committed war crimes the Croatian War Crimes Prosecution made 2004,” Strbac explained.

President of the Zagreb-based Documentation and Information Center Veritas Savo Štrbac said Vrljanović moved from the Republic of Srpska to the United States nine years ago.
