The crossing had been closed for over a month due to the migrant crisis.

Stefanovic said that the normal functioning of traffick was an example of good police cooperation and added he expected EU's most important countries to get more seriously and strongly involved in solving the migrant crisis.

"It's impossible for the transit countries to simply bear the greatest burden of the crisis, but regardless of all the challenges ahead, we will strive to maintain our good-neighborly relations at the highest possible level. It's important that the population is not suffering any kind of consequences and that the transit international routes that are the most important to Serbia, that go through Hungary, remain always open," he said.

Pinter thanked Stefanovic for the effort invested in order to reopen the crossings and said it depended on the good cooperation between the two countries, the two ministries, and police forces.

He agreed with Stefanovic that the halting of illegal migrants was not up to Serbia and Hungary.

"We will do everything to preserve the laws of Hungary and the EU, " said Pinter.

Opened to traffic last spring, Horgos 2 is the newest border crossing set up between the two countries that was operational until the outbreak of the migrant crisis and the entry into force of Hungary's new, much stricter state border law on September 15.

All border crossings between Serbia and Hungary are once again open as of Thursday.
