Serbian Radical Party (SRS) leader Vojislav Seselj has requested EUR 10mn worth of damages and an acquittal. Seselj, who has been in the Hague Tribunal holding for eight years now, is basing his acquittal request on the lack of evidence. Seselj requests damages, announces suit It remains unclear to whom the SRS leader will send his damages claim since the Hague Tribunal does not pay damages. He cannot request the money from Serbia either since he did not stand trial in the country. Seselj, who is charged with crimes against humanity and violation of laws and customs of war in Croatia, Vojvodina and Bosnia-Herzegovina from 1991 until 1993, claims that the prosecution has not proved the charges against some. He has, therefore, announced that he would request EUR 10mn worth of damages. He pointed out that he had a lawyer in New York who would sue the UN and all the judges and that had filed charges against 40 false witnesses. Presenting his arguments, the SRS leader stressed that his final request for the damages would be EUR 100mn if there would be any problems with the request. The prosecution has concluded that all charges could remain in effect. The trial chamber will make a written decision on Seselj’s request after it has reviewed 1,300 pages of evidence. It is expected that the decision will be made in several months. It has not happened so far in the Hague Tribunal that a suspect is acquitted in this phase of the proceeding. Vojislav Seselj
