The second semester begins

Students in schools in Vojvodina returned to classrooms a week earlier, on January 12.Minister of Education Dejan Vuk Stanković confirmed that the first day of the second semester will start normally in all schools across Serbia, even though there had been discussions about extending winter break in some schools or holding classes online due to adverse weather conditions.&ldquo;According to all the information we have, and we have formed a crisis team within the Ministry of Education that coordinates work with school administrations and principals across Serbia, for now, the first day of school will proceed as normal. There will be no transition to a hybrid learning model, where online classes are used as a substitute for in-person lessons,&rdquo; Stanković said.He added that a state of emergency currently exists in three municipalities, but students in those areas will also attend school as usual.&ldquo;Meteorological forecasts indicate that we may experience another cold wave. It should not be a surprise if other teaching models are used. If there is no electricity in those municipalities, it simply will not be possible to conduct online classes,&rdquo; Stanković noted.The Ministry of Education announced that a team has been formed to monitor the situation on the ground regarding weather conditions across Serbia and is in constant communication with school principals and local authorities to ensure that, where necessary, conditions are provided for uninterrupted school operations and any issues caused by low temperatures or snowfall are resolved.The Ministry also sent a circular to school principals emphasizing the need to pay special attention to measures that ensure the safe stay and work of children in schools under the current weather conditions.At the school level, it is necessary to immediately carry out inspections of access to school facilities to ensure safe movement, and to properly mark areas that are closed off due to falling icicles or snow from roofs.The circular reminds that schools and schoolyards must be safe for children to stay and move around, and that teacher supervision and engagement of support staff should be increased accordingly, the ministry statement said.The Ministry of Internal Affairs, on the occasion of the start of the second semester, issued an appeal to drivers to respect traffic limits, emphasizing that the safety of the youngest is a shared responsibility.According to the Academic Calendar for the 2025/2026 school year, students have autumn, winter, Sretenje, spring, and summer breaks during the school year.
