The quarterfinal match in Beijing was reminiscent of the Serbian tennis star’s best days, as he came back after losing the first set and produced a consistent and assured performance for the remainder of the match.Novak Djokovic remained unbeaten at the Beijing tournament, which he returned to after 11 years. The match lasted two hours and 35 minutes. Djokovic is ranked 11th in the world, while Zverev is second in the ATP rankings.Djokovic secured the victory after a major comeback against the world No. 2, a player who recently won the French Open and US Open and reached the Wimbledon final. The German entered the match as one of the favorites, while Djokovic, given his results and circumstances in recent months, was in a somewhat less favorable position. However, events on the court did not confirm those expectations.Zverev won the first set after breaking serve early in the match. Djokovic had two chances to get back into the set and level the score at 5–5, but failed to capitalize on them. The German served at an exceptionally high level throughout the match, finishing with an impressive 85 percent of first serves landing in.Meng Gao / Alamy / ProfimediaDespite this, Djokovic managed to find a way to stay in the match. His game was built around solid defense, patience and constant pressure on his opponent’s service games. The key moment came in the second set. At 5–4, Djokovic created new break-point opportunities and this time converted the first of two. He leveled the match and completely changed its momentum. In the deciding set, the Serbian did not allow Zverev to take control. Djokovic continued to play aggressively, capitalizing on every weakness in the German’s game and breaking serve once again to take a 2–1 lead in sets. There was no let-up in his performance until the end. Unlike in some of his previous matches, Djokovic remained fully focused from the first point to the last and closed out the match in routine fashion. The victory is even more impressive considering that Djokovic remains unbeaten in Beijing. His record in the city now stands at an incredible 32–0.At 39 years old, Djokovic once again defeated one of the world’s top players, showing that despite his age and all the predictions about the end of his career, he can still beat a player at the very top of the ATP rankings. The Serbian will face Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals in the Chinese capital today at 1 p.m. Central European Time. The ATP tournament in Beijing is being played for a total prize pool of $4,089,385.All the action from the Chinese capital was available to follow in the LIVE BLOG on B92 Sport.
