The United Kingdom has explored the possibility of a ban and has already partially introduced restrictions through age-verification requirements under the Online Safety Act. Denmark is also close to introducing its own ban. Across the Atlantic, Canadian regulators presented their own proposal in June to ban social media access for children under the age of 16.Although lawmakers around the world are increasingly supporting such bans, potential drawbacks should also be considered. At least two separate studies published in April and June found that a significant number of Australian children continued using social media even after the ban came into effect, likely due to platforms taking a lenient approach to age verification. As shown by early reports of difficulties with Roblox’s age-verification system, implementing such measures is highly complex. The consequences of France’s ban could easily be accompanied by similar challenges.
