Argentina became the final team to reach the 2026 World Cup semifinals after defeating Switzerland 3–1 after extra time (1–1) in a thrilling quarterfinal clash in Kansas City. The memorable encounter was decided in the 112th minute, when Julián Álvarez lived up to his nickname "The Spider" and scored one of the most spectacular goals of this year's World Cup to put Argentina 2–1 ahead. Lautaro Martínez sealed the victory in stoppage time of the second period of extra time."I am extremely happy. We fought until the very end. At one point, the match became very difficult, even though we had a man advantage, and then extra time followed. However, we believed that the goal would come if we stayed together and continued attacking — and that is exactly what happened," Álvarez said.Argentina will now face England in the battle for a place in the World Cup final."Of course, we would have liked to win earlier, but we know how difficult it is to play at a World Cup. Every match in this tournament has been extremely demanding. We are two steps away from our goal, and we will give everything we have to take them," Álvarez concluded.
