German ski jumper Philipp Raimund, who has openly discussed his fear of heights, triumphed in the normal hill event, leading a generation of Olympic debutants ahead of experienced competitors, former medalists, and world champions.Last year, he was forced to withdraw from a competition due to his fear of heights, something he shared openly on social media.“Many of you have already asked why I’m not jumping, so here’s the explanation. As some of you already know, I have a fear of heights,” Raimund wrote on Instagram after withdrawing from a competition in Slovenia last March. He noted at the time that he generally manages to keep the problem under control, which proved true during the Olympic final.“The issue usually is that I have too much strength in my legs, which makes my movements a bit unstable. This time, I knew I just needed to straighten up and let the jump happen,” Raimund said after winning gold. With his best jump of 106.5 meters and a total of 274.1 points, the German clinched victory in a dramatic competition decided by the final jump, beating Polish jumper Kacper Tomaszek, who took silver, while Japan’s Ren Nikaido and Switzerland’s Gregor Deschwanden shared the bronze medal.Raimund entered his first Olympic Games ranked sixth in the world. Before this competition, his best results included a fourth-place finish at the World Championships in the team event and a single World Cup win in a mixed team competition.“I’ve never won a World Cup race, and now I’m an Olympic champion. I’ll probably be remembered for this for the rest of my life because I have a gold medal. It’s truly incredible,” Raimund said.
