The spokesman told Brussels-based Politico that this is an attempt by Merz to persuade the Belgian leadership to support a €165 billion loan for reparations to Ukraine, using frozen Russian assets located on Belgian soil.According to reports, Merz canceled his trip to Oslo to visit the EU capital, following the European Commission’s proposal of a financial package to fund Ukraine’s defense against Russian forces.De Wever remains opposed to the initiative because most of the assets are managed by the Euroclear financial depository, based in Brussels.EU leaders are expected to discuss the initiative in Brussels on December 18, and according to the Brussels portal, failure to reach an agreement could force EU governments to use taxpayers’ money.
