The bridge collapsed, several vehicles fell into the river: Mass incident PHOTO/VIDEO
A large container ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, which crosses the Patapsco River.
Due to the force of the impact, the bridge broke into several pieces that fell into the river, and after a few minutes it completely collapsed.
This event was declared a mass incident involving several cars.
According to initial reports, several vehicles fell into the water.
Chief Kevin Cartwright, director of communications for the Baltimore City Fire Department, told the BBC that "as many as seven people and several vehicles" fell into the river.
A multi-agency rescue operation is now underway led by the fire department, in cooperation with the US Coast Guard and other Maryland agencies.
The Maryland Department of Transportation confirms all lanes are closed in both directions due to an "incident" on the bridge. The Francis Scott Key Bridge is about two and a half kilometers long.
