Nobel Prize in literature awarded

As announced, the Nobel Prize was awarded to Anne Carson “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.”

Throughout her career, Anne Carson has combined poetry with translation work and teaching at various universities, according to the announcement.

“Almost all of her literary output is focused on the intersection between a linguist’s fascination with words and a poet’s desire for new meanings. She herself identified the etymology of words as the starting point of all her creative work,” the citation said.

Anne Carson is a poet, essayist and translator who lived for many years in Montreal, where she taught at McGill University. She later taught classical and comparative literature at the University of Michigan and New York University.

She has published around twenty books that blend elements of poetry, essays, prose, criticism, translation, dramatic dialogue, fiction and nonfiction.

Her works include Eros the Bittersweet (1986), Glass, Irony, and God (1992), as well as Short Talks (1992), which was published in Serbian as Kratka slova by NB “Stefan Prvovenčani” in Kraljevo in 2018.

Another notable work is Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse (1998), published in Serbian as Autobiografija Crvenog by the Cultural Center of Novi Sad in 2021, as well as The Beauty of the Husband (2002), translated into Serbian as Lepota muža and published by the Cultural Center of Novi Sad in 2015. She also published Red Doc in 2013, released in Serbian as Crveni Doc.

The most prestigious literary prize is awarded by the Swedish Academy, whose committee consists of 18 distinguished members, prominent figures from the worlds of literature, academia and intellectual life in general.
