Emergency situation: Nine aircraft squawked emergency code 7700 VIDEO

A British Airways aircraft landed at the London airport and, according to the Mirror, caused disruption by blocking the only operational runway.

British Airways confirmed that a technical issue occurred with the aircraft but did not provide further details.

The disruption caused delays and diversions for numerous flights to Gatwick overnight.

Nine aircraft squawked the emergency code 7700, most likely due to low fuel levels. Another five flights were also diverted to other airports, with some of them redirected away from London.

The runway was reopened shortly before 1:30 a.m. local time.

"Earlier this morning, the runway was briefly closed due to a technical issue with an aircraft. As a result, a small number of flights were diverted, and most later returned to London Gatwick.

As always, the safety and security of our passengers remain our highest priority," a spokesperson for London Gatwick Airport said.
