Woman killed on street in Germany; Witnesses detain suspected husband PHOTO
A woman was killed in the center of Kelkheim, Germany, and her husband, who is suspected of carrying out the attack, was arrested after witnesses overpowered him and held him until police arrived, authorities said today.
According to Hesse police, the man attacked his wife with a knife on the street last night, inflicting fatal injuries. The woman died at the scene, Der Spiegel reported.
Witnesses intervened and restrained the suspect until emergency services and police arrived, after which he was taken into custody.
The man was injured during the arrest, according to police and prosecutors in Frankfurt.
The motive and circumstances of the killing are not yet known.
Investigators carried out a crime scene examination and forensic work overnight. Police said there were numerous witnesses, as the attack took place in a busy area near a marketplace with several shops and businesses.
Clergy were also present at the scene to provide support to those affected, and police noted that witnessing such an incident placed a significant psychological burden on bystanders.
Kelkheim, a town of around 28,000 residents, is located in the Main-Taunus district, near Frankfurt am Main.
