37 dead; Search underway for missing persons VIDEO
The death toll from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale that struck the Sarangani area on the Philippine island of Mindanao on Monday has risen to 37, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said.
According to the latest data, 33 people were killed in the Soccsksargen region, including 18 in Sarangani, 12 in General Santos City, and three in South Cotabato, while another four deaths were reported in the Davao region, GMA News reported.
A total of 456 people were injured in the earthquake, while four people are still missing.
The disaster affected 17,689 families, or more than 77,000 residents in the impacted areas.
Rescue teams are continuing their search for the missing.
A total of 1,889 homes have been damaged, of which around 1,500 have been completely destroyed.
The General Santos International Airport was also damaged due to the effects of the earthquake, leading to flight cancellations and diversions.
Despite this, authorities have allowed the airport to be used for military, government, and humanitarian flights.
Classes have been suspended in some areas due to the effects of the earthquake, while humanitarian aid continues to be delivered to the affected regions.
