Alarm in Berlin; Alliances are collapsing, the world is coming apart at the seams
Germany must redefine its geopolitical role to adapt to a situation where it is unclear which alliances it can rely on and which will endure in the future, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated today.
In his address to the German parliament, Pistorius said that the latest negotiations to end the war in Ukraine have highlighted shifts in the global "balance of power," Reuters reports.
"The geopolitical chessboard is changing rapidly, its patterns, its layout. Alliances are shifting faster than previously imaginable. For us, as Germans in the European Union and NATO, this means we must redefine our position, redefine our role in the coming years, because we do not know which alliances we can still rely on in the future and how long they will last," Pistorius said.
Earlier today, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Germany will continue to support Ukraine as much as possible and will increase funding next year to €11.5 billion.
"Putin must understand that he has no chance of winning this war at the expense of the European order of freedom and peace," Merz concluded.
