Greece: They arrive in great numbers, all weekend
More than 500 migrants, mostly men, reached the southern coast of the Greek island of Crete over the weekend, from where they were transferred to reception centers, the Greek Coast Guard announced today.
In the coordinated actions of the Greek Coast Guard, a total of 508 migrants were identified on Saturday and Sunday, who reached Crete in several different boats, and four smugglers were arrested in the same period, Protothema reported.
On Saturday, members of the Greek Coast Guard located two wooden boats southwest of Gavdos, from which 111 migrants were rescued, including one woman and one minor.
Later in the day, another inflatable boat with 51 foreigners, including 13 minors, was spotted south of Kala Limena, and two Sudanese nationals, aged 18 and 27, were arrested and identified as human traffickers, while the others were transferred to the Malacca Immigration Detention Center.
A similar operation was carried out on Diskos beach in the municipality of Gortina, where 53 migrants landed, including five minors, who were transferred to reception centers, while a man (24), who was a Sudanese citizen, was arrested as a people smuggler, and the transport boat was confiscated.
On Sunday afternoon, the Greek Coast Guard said a Frontex vessel located and rescued 42 foreigners on board in a sea area 30 nautical miles southeast of Gavdos, and they were transferred to the port of Agia Galini.
The migrants said that they left Libya by boat on Friday morning and that they gave the smugglers 2,600 to 3,500 euros.
