State of emergency in Portugal – Ronaldo speaks out, Prime Minister calls him and the coach
Cristiano Ronaldo’s sudden departure from the national team has also prompted a reaction from Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, who asked the head of the football federation to review the situation.
Portuguese media report that Montenegro called Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença and asked him to speak with head coach Jorge Jesus, who reportedly “angered” Ronaldo with his decision not to bring him on against Norway.
The Portuguese star did not take the decision well and, after a conversation with Jesus, left the national team camp on Wednesday evening. His decision triggered a series of reactions from teammates, fans, the wider public and even the country’s prime minister.
Some media outlets also report that the prime minister spoke directly with Ronaldo.
The prime minister’s intention is clearly to calm tensions, which may now happen following his intervention, or at the very least the main parties involved will, to begin with, speak again about everything that has happened over the past 24 hours and reconsider their decisions.
Luís Montenegro has a good relationship with the national team coach, which is why he particularly wanted to speak with him and hear directly from him the reasons behind Ronaldo’s departure from the national team in the middle of the competition.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo also addressed the public with a message on his Instagram profile.
“Following the national team coach’s press conference and my conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the national team training camp. In due time, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led to my departure from the national team, to which I have always been fully committed. For now, it is time to wish Portugal and all my teammates, without exception, the best of luck,” Ronaldo said.
Despite everything, Jesus insists that he is still counting on Ronaldo.
After the match against Norway, he dismissed the possibility that the captain had been dropped from the team and explained that the decision not to bring him on was solely related to the way the match was unfolding.
During the day, a close friend of the Portuguese superstar also spoke out, revealing what he claims were the real reasons behind Ronaldo’s dissatisfaction and subsequent departure from the team.
He claims that Ronaldo, Jesus and Proença held a meeting after the match against Norway, during which the coach apologized to the captain for sending him to warm up and then deciding not to bring him on. Ronaldo was also reportedly told that Jesus would mention the apology publicly, but he did not do so at the press conference, where he avoided addressing that part of the matter in front of reporters. According to Ronaldo’s close friend, this was precisely why Ronaldo left the national team.
